Publisher's summary

Kris Longknife is a daughter of privilege, born to money and power. Her father is the prime minister of her home planet, her mother the consummate politician's wife. She's been raised only to be beautiful and marry well. But the heritage of the military Longknifes courses through Kris' blood - and, against her parents' objections, she enlists in the Marines.

She has a lot to live up to and a lot to prove in the long-running struggle among her powerful family, a highly defensive - and offensive - Earth, and the hundreds of warring colonies. Then an ill-conceived attack brings the war close to home, putting Kris' life on the line. Now she has only one choice: certain death on the front lines of rim space - or mutiny.

A lightweight but very enjoyable space opera.

A good book to listen to in a comfortable chair by the fireside with a bottle of your favorite beverage ready at hand. Kris Longknife turns out to be an interesting protagonist and the book has some of the characteristics of the old Doc Smith space operas. I've ordered the second book in the series and looking forward to another pleasant evening of the Longknife saga.

Another hit for Mike Shepherd

Mike Shepherd writes strong characters with engaging storylines. Once you get grabbed you have to find out what happens next. Can't wait to start the next book.

ok bar the narration

On the story itself - yes, I generally got sucked in and will likely try another in the series. Characters are I think better rounded than Honor Harrington, but the plotting not a shade on something like Vatta's War.

As for the audiobook - I almost dropped it as Dina Pearlman's narration was a real grind: No, not everyone needs to sound like a pre-pubescent valley girl; she can't pull off a Scottish accent for chips; and when the text says "she mumbled" then don't ignore the stage direction!

I think the audiobook producer must have been asleep at the wheel. However persistence paid off and by the end of the book I'd pretty much sublimated my narration hangups.

Good Reintroduction to Sci-Fi

I used to love Science Fiction many years ago and gradually went to other books. This was my first Sci-Fi book on audio & I must say that I loved it. There was plenty of action, adventure with a tiny bit of a hint of romance. The narrator couldn't do all the accents but did a credible job with her reading...let's just say that I have heard MUCH WORSE, many times so she gets 4 stars for her reading.

The storyline came with several points of view and politics played a huge part...just as it does in life. It was a credible story but with that being said... many times I knew what was going to happen before it did. However, I usually do - so there weren't many surprise factors. I attribute my knowing to reading / listening to books constantly & there just aren't many plot twists that haven't been done. The author had the military & politics perfectly.

Kris is a Naval Ensign with a long Military Family history to live up to which she does well. She has the additional burden of being from a wealthy political family & I liked her POV of what that felt like along with the jealousy and envy of others who see her only as a RICH LONGKNIFE.

Overall, it was an enjoyable listen...so much so that I did get another book in the series that was "on sale". Hopefully, some of the others will be on sale in the future & I'll flesh out the series.

I'm glad to say that this book made me want to read more Science Fiction. I didn't realize that I'd missed it that much.

Mutineer

A delightful read. A little predictable in spots, but the overall book was very good. Enough interest to purchase the next book in the series for sure!

Starts out rough.

The performance starts out more breathy than a bodice ripper, but soon finds a better tone. In the finest tradition of, better, military sci-fi it’s got great characters and great action. Recommended for fans of the genre.
