Publisher's summary

Aliens have invaded the Milky Way.

Captain Martin and his fleet at the opposite end of our galaxy is all that stands between the emerging ancient aliens and certain destruction of humanity. Even with the help of powerful magic, the alien menace may be too much to overcome.

Elsewhere, Agent Hague chases down rumors of a secret cult after an assassination attempt on the president of the Federation's life.

With the emergence of the long-foretold aliens, the Federation stands on the brink of destruction.

Can Captain Martin and his allies hold the line? Can Agent Hague uncover a plot within the Federation?

A tribute to Star Wars books of old, and the first book in a new trilogy in the existing Seven Stars Universe, Emergence is set nearly 2,000 years after Shadows Fall and features cameos from many of the longer-lived heroes of ages past.

listening to a radio drama instead on an audio boo

Great story, cannot wait to buy the next book. Performance was great apart from female voices. It made me think I was listening to a radio drama instead on an audio book.

Awesome series so far.

Really enjoyed the book. Even more so it ties into previous books by the author.

Great Start to a Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, this was a great story. I normally do not like magic and stuff in books because it makes it less believable but this book actually kept it just to a minimum and did not go overboard using magic to solve all of the problems. Those Characters who do have special powers can't go on forever and at times if over used would be out of the battle recovering for some time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Emergence?

The Final battle scene had me on my toes waiting to see if they could make it or not. I was unsure of what the results could be and that helps make this a good book.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The reader cannot to female voices and makes all females sound like a man with a raspy voice. Also, why can readers not understand that HUD is a word you say not spell out, and why do they also spell out ASAP and not read it? If this is a military-ish book then the terms should be read out correctly. Saying HUD is faster than spelling it every time.

This book did one thing that I really loved, the sound was altered for COM traffic adding a more realistic feel to the book.

Oh and one more thing I didn't like was the readers recording, his mic has a flatter tone than even the "This is Audible" intro and it was jarring to listen to with headphones on. Playing it in the car I could not notice but with headphones, it was hard to listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really I did listen when I could while in my car but I was not left sitting waiting in my car.

Blend of science and magic.

I liked the story with an interesting political twist involving why people are surprised. The narration was well done but should have been a women with all the female characters. The male version of a woman’s voice gets tiring.

Two Pronged Story

Dayne Edmondson has written a clever story divided into two fronts. One prong related the story of Captain Martin and his fleet which is opposing hostile alien enemies who intend to destroy humanity. The other prong is about Agent Hague who is trying to figure out who is behind the assassination attempt of the president of the Federation. Dayne adds a little magic with the inclusion of the "Eternals" who are humans with superpowers. I enjoyed the story even though at times it was a little confusing when jumping between the two different fronts. Dan Carroll's narration added to the entertainment of the book. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

A good idea, in a rush to jam in far too much.

-Story-
This book had a lot of good ideas, but for what I think is the first time on audible I actually wish this small book had been substantially longer. I don't particularly mean that in that I was especially attached to any of the cast and couldn't let go. Instead I mean that this book feels like it was the script for a bad action movie, or maybe even an anime, the way it moves from action scene to action scene while force-feeding you more and more exposition and new caveats. If Dayne Edmondson wanted to keep everything from the story and not have it just be one jumbled mess the book needed to be probably half again as long. Its either that or he wasn't sure what he wanted the book to be about and just threw spaghetti at the fridge to see what stuck. To make my point allow me to categorize this book. Its a futuristic book that seems to start out as a fighter pilot story, then moves into espionage...no wait sorry that's a war story in space, with magic, and superhuman immortal mages, oh and aliens. Also, some of the lines in the book are almost painful, one of the bad guys literally says "Your hubris will be your undoing, enjoy your doom" Its the kind of line you expect to hear from a villain in an old popcorn flick right before Segal blows nameless extra #41 away with a grenade. What's worst is that I think the book could have been a good story if it took time to develop any of these things or characters instead of just throwing them at you one after the other in rapid fire.

-Narrator-
To be honest I'm not sure how to feel about Dan Carroll. On the one hand his narration was clear and understandable the entire book through and he did have a good rhythm to his reading. On the other, it may just be me but the tone he uses throughout the book sounds like someone reading a children's book. For a book that is darn near one long action scene he doesn't do a great job at impressing that feeling through his voice. Also there is a main character who is an immortal but the author makes a point of it to include the fact he doesn't look more than about 20 devoting an entire scene to the conflict of appearance and age......but he just gets stereotypical old guy voice making you forget the fact that he's supposed to be youthful rather easily.

-TL;DR-
A lot of wonderful ideas put in a blender and then fed to you with a fire hose. Decent narrator depending on your personal preference. Not terrible if you get it on sale but I don't think it will open your eyes to anything new.

-Obligatory disclaimer-
I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
