Publisher's summary

On some days, New York is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. This was one of the other days... Melody Malone, owner and sole employee of the Angel Detective Agency, has an unexpected caller. It's movie star Rock Railton, and he thinks someone is out to kill him. When he mentions the 'kiss of the Angel', she takes the case.

Angels are Melody's business... At the press party for Railton's latest movie, studio owner Max Kliener invites Melody to the film set of their next blockbuster. He's obviously spotted her potential, and Melody is flattered when Kliener asks her to become a star. But the cost of fame, she'll soon discover, is greater than anyone could possibly imagine. Will Melody be able to escape Kliener's dastardly plan - before the Angels take Manhattan?

Loved it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Doctor Who: The Angel's Kiss to be better than the print version?

Yes. Definitely.

What did you like best about this story?

I listened to this book during a break in the new Doctor Who episodes, so it was a very nice Doctor Who fix for me.

What does Alex Kingston bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's so much better to hear River's voice than to just read it for yourself.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There's a part in the book where she makes a comment about her name, (I don't want to give the exact quote) but I was cracking up laughing. I really enjoyed the whole book, but that part really stood out to me.

Any additional comments?

Let me just say, that I LOVE River. She may be my favorite TV character of all time. (aside from the Doctor, of course) So, basically, I had no choice but to love this book. It was sassy and funny and just very River. As much as I enjoy watching episodes with her in them, it was so much fun being inside her head. It was just perfect. Oh, and the fact that it was narrated by Alex Kingston of course made it that much better. :)

Fun prequel to Angels of New York

An important point to note is that this is, in fact, a Melody Malone story. Just like it says on the cover. It is NOT a Doctor Who story. It's connected, it stars River Song (sort of) as a pseudo-hard-boiled detective. It leads nearly seamlessly into the Angels of New York episode. But if you are waiting for the Doctor or Amy or Rory or anyone else.... you're out of luck.
That being said, this is loads of fun and I could listen to Alex Kingston all day. So I recommend it for super-serious Whovians or anyone else with a River/Doctor crush.

One of my fav DR Who books!!

If you could sum up Doctor Who: The Angel's Kiss in three words, what would they be?

It was very refreshing having River tell the story. Though it is not the book that the Doctor was reading in the TV show Angels take Manhattan it is more of a prequel to it, I would love to see more books written from her prospective. All of the dates, where your curiosity is peeked but they never reveal the secret. I mean who wouldn't want to know more about Jimmy the Fish. It could be released as her journal of sorts. Without of course, allowing there to be to many spoilers to be released as to not ruin the tv show.

What did you like best about this story?

Her point of view. It was so sexy without being slutty. As the DR is very non sexual in most cases, some of his best parts are when he is in a sexual situation, it was very refreshing to see her so full of sexual energy and to use it to her advantage. Not saying this book as any sex in it because it doesn't but I can certainly see why the doctor said Yowzah while reading it!

What about Alex Kingston’s performance did you like?

She played it brilliantly as she always does. Again if more books written by River/Melody Alex should certainly be the one who reads them. Anyone else would just ruin it.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

To short to make a movie out of

Any additional comments?

I really do think that they should make more books along these lines. Let her finish out the angels bit ending with Rory and Amy being gone. Then start out a new adventure all of the fun things she does when she is with or without the doctor. We really do not see enough of the doctors wife on the TV show so it is nice to read more about her between shows.

Doctor Who without the Doctor

What does the missus get up to when hubby sweetie is off saving the universe? She runs a detective agency specialising in angels. Sexy River (oops, I mean Melody) is being her bad girl best and getting to the reasons behind the mysteries.

Alex Kingston is so at home with this character. Her narration is perfect. After one listen I could see the whole book as if I'd been there. Time travel the easy way.

If none of this review made any sense to you it probably means you haven't seen the last few seasons of the BBC's Doctor Who and won't understand the characters in this book. Go watch the series and then start on the books. Both the series and the books are very good.

A River Song Adventure

There's no Doctor in this story, but it drops subliminal messages throughout that relate to the TV series and make you feel like you're in on something because you know what they're talking about. Very well done. River is a different companion than anybody else the Doctor has traveled with, and not only have they written her personality so accurately, having Alex Kingston narrate it is just perfect. I just like to listen to hear her voice.

Nice story to fall asleep to

It was a pleasure to listen to Alex’s voice! So soothing.

However, the story was not to my taste, sadly. Too straightforward and predictable, without any twists. And didn’t tell us anything new about the character. It would have probably worked almost fine as part of a short story collection, but, for a standalone story, it is just too generic and unremarkable.

So, 5 stars for the wonderful Alex Kingston, 2 stars for a pretty unremarkable plot = 3 stars overall.

Oh, River, River, River...

What an enjoyable telling of a well written, very interesting story.
River Song (Melody Malone) continues her work as a NYC Private Eye in this installment of the Melody Malone Mysteries. When a small movie company's male star comes to Melody to keep from being killed, Melody begins an investigation that goes from odd to bizarre when the star who hires her doesn't recall doing so...

bleh. Not what I was expecting.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was expecting a story that would accompany the doctor who TV series. Like the other radio/ audio books have done in the past. This was more like a spin off. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I was hoping for more of a tie in to the television episode Angels Take Manhattan. I had assumed it would Mention the Doctor, his companions or the tardis. No such luck.

Any additional comments?

Alex Kingston did a wonderful job narrating this story. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

It was all melody. No tie back into River

I really enjoyed the spin-off. I liked that it is still connected to Doctor Who. At first I was hoping it tied into the episode where they were reading the book. But glad that it didn’t.
