Publisher's Summary

Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.

1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.

Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?

1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?

From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

Timey-Wimey Whirlwind of Fun

What a joy this is, made more so by Alex Kingston’s performance! The plot is complex to no end, juggling a main story, as well as a story-within-a-story, skipping wildly through time, doubling back on itself, encountering new and familiar faces along the way, and eventually blurring which is the main story and which is the story-within-a-story. It’s a wonder that with so many plot threads, taking us farther and farther from any sign of a conclusion, it is able to neatly and satisfyingly tie it all up in the end.
I will say that at a few points some of the minor characters are hard to keep track of. But otherwise this is a heck of a tale. It’s as if someone said “No one writes a more timey-wimey tale than Stephen Moffat”, and then Alex Kingston replied, “Hold my beer!” And her reading isn’t just your standard narration. This is a performance!

Please Write More Stories Alex ❤

this was so delightful, immersive, and sassy, I would love to see Alex Kingston write more books, not just as River Song, but any type of new story she can bring up ❤

If you love River, this is essential

I loved this. The story is fabulous, jumping into a few different times and places. Alex does a great job of narrating, as you would expect, but I found even the non River/Melody characters were distinguishable enough. Thank you Alex, proving how fantastic you are at writing on top of acting/voicing. I look forward to listening to it again and hope that she continues to write. 👏🏻💜

Hello Sweetie

An amazing book read and written by an author that knows her characters inside and out. I have long enjoyed the works of both Alex Kingston and River Song (the best companion hands down, by far, forever, the end). I loved the lot of this book, the stories the wove themselves into a single creation (that mayhaps held the power to destroy all) was both interesting and entertaining.
Spoilers, just kidding, this is the best Doctor Who book I have read and I hope Ms. Kingston makes more. I knew she was an amazing actor and now I know she is an extremely talented writer as well.

Fast and confusing

I love Doctor Who universe and Alex is just a pure delight, but this book was a bit out of my depth. Too many plot lines running simultaneously and it was hard to keep up with the story. Performance was amazing, but the story it self, quite confusing.

Enjoyed this very much

I am hoping that Alex Kingston writes another Melody Malone mystery. I enjoyed this so much-there was a lovely mix of sci-fi and mystery, of futuristic and historical. Listening to River Song herself? Glorious.

Exuberant, smart, engaging.

All the things you'd expect from the redoubtable River Song, and then some! A genuinely gripping tale, woven with smooth, dark chocolate wit, intrigue and as full of sparkle as the Galerie des Glase. Encore!

A truly riveting story....

I would highly recommend this book & audiobook, it is amazing, fun, interesting & very original. Can't wait for Kingston to do more adventures.
Having played the part, Kingstons knows this character inside out & I think is the best person to write more adventures. I hope that this book is just the beginning of a whole new series about the extraordinary adventures of everybodys favorite mystery time lady, no not Missy.
One of the many perks of having Kingston reading this book is that she knows how to tell the story in a way that gives the story more life.

I was surprised, delighted and satisfied!
Perfect amount of whoness, great story with lovely layers.
Better than cake!
Alex reads her story with such skill that the characters instantly coalesce! So impressed at that level of skill I’ll now search out any book Alex has written OR read for.

Alex Kingston is amazing

I listened to this book because it was by Alex Kingston and I was not disappointed. Excellent voice acting and great story. Very ‘doctor who’ in that I felt it was predictable but then at the last second it all got turned on it’s head. Great story.

Not great Doctor Who story

I love River Song so of course when I saw this I had to get it a listen straight away. But I detective stores are not my scene so didn't love this story. Also I assumed this story takes place sometime before she dies but it seems it doesn't?

it has some minor Dortor Who story line mistakes like River drawing pictures of the Silance or being rescued before sending a message to the Doctor to rescue her. The Dortor isn't in it which is completely fine and expected.

I liked the way Alex played with time and the mystical Eye. I absolutely agree River should come back. I don't see why she can't since she was saved to the computer and all the other people who where saved came back well the ones who got transmitted into the computer anyway. But she couldn't come back with the currany Jodie because River would steal all the scenes.

Love!

Wow. This was thoroughly enjoyable. Very in theme with Doctor Who but at the same time incredibly individual. You could listen to it without any prior knowledge of the Doctor Who universe or River Song. A few pop ups from some beloved characters too! Spoilers! Alex Kingston, please write more novels!
