In September 2019, Max Morgan boarded a vintage Beech Twin aircraft with the five ladies from his office and the three-person flight crew for a flight to Sheridan, Wyoming. Max’s boss had scheduled a team-building exercise for survival training, so they had bags packed with camping gear, firearms, and ammunition.
Then the aircraft hit a mysterious vortex in the air that pulled them inexorably toward the west at a dizzying speed. That vortex dumped their aircraft back in time in northern Germany 1,700 years earlier.
How are Max, the six remaining women from his flight, and the two orphans he rescued going to survive as they help their Saxon neighbors try to survive Frankish raids and the coming Roman army?
Warning: This book includes unusual relationships, descriptions of violence, slavery, and loose interpretations of historical events. If that’s not your thing, then please skip this book with the author’s blessing.

There are a lot of other things that are going on at the same time...like his relationships. There is someone waiting to join Max's harem, and he has a child on the way. Let's not forget the 2 kids he basically adopted in book 1. All-in-all this is an excellent sequel to the first book and I'm looking forward to the next one.
I was given a free code for this audiobook in exchange for an early and honest review.
This is a GREAT story!

“Saxon Max 2: War Chief” is enjoyable, but is not without its flaws. I’ll get the flaws out of the way and then address what I liked.
The author is proud (as he says in the afterword) of his research into history to make the trip back 1700 years as realistic as possible. Unfortunately, there are so many details of village names, tribes, changing weapons etc that my ears glazed over frequently. I don’t know that much about the history of the time, so I can’t speak to the accuracy of the details…with one exception. A league is three miles; not 1.5 (nautical miles are slightly more). It did sort of drive me crazy every time distance and time were presented as a league being 1.5 miles.
My bigger frustration with Book 2 was with a couple of the women. Jennifer is portrayed as a gold-star lesbian, but she can’t keep her hands off Max’s junk, names her favorite dildo “Big Bob”, and wants to sleep with Max over and over and over once she decides she wants a baby. I’ve never met a lesbian IRL or in literature who wants a man as much as does Jenn. The other woman who’s at odds with her presented back story is Siobhan. She’s reluctant to have relations with anyone after having been gang-assaulted years ago, yet loves and wants to have sex with Max. Okay, so far so good. But, at one point she says she wishes Max would just take her so that she would be free of having to take the initiative. Errr, no….hard no.
Finally, I was surprised that with all the violence and death everywhere, that Max would make it such as mission to free one particular a trader and the trader’s wife and daughter that he would place himself and others he loves and for whom he’s responsible at risk of injury or death. No spoiler, but yup….I called it.
I hope you’re still with me, because after my first few paragraphs you’re probably wondering whether this is a fake review with high stars given to a crap book. Let me be clear from here on: this is a very good book, despite the aforementioned flaws.
I don’t mind that Max is a bit of a superhero; I’ve grown tired of stories with overweight, unemployed kids living in their mom’s basement becoming the one true one once transported to another world. Max is ex-military and puts his knowledge of weaponry and strategy to great use throughout the book as he trains folks to resist the Franks and Romans. At one point, he considers whether he might be changing history, but decides that as long has he and his wives and friends are here, he’ll do what it takes to keep them alive. I don’t read lots of time travel stories, but this makes sense to me!
Max also brings some 21st century sensibilities to his 4th century life. When a local girl reaches marrying age for her time (16yo), Max insists she wait two years until she’s 18yo to marry him. Also, Max abhors slavery and taking women without their consent, and works to free slaves and help assaulters have a quicker conversation with their god about their deeds than they might have planned! BTW, I recently saw a conversation thread on Reddit where several folks blasted the author as having a r*pe fetish. I have no idea how they interpreted that! While there is plenty of 4th century violence and assaults, the author uses his MC to express revulsion.
With all of the battle action and deaths, it may sound odd, but this story is very much a slice-of-life story. The epilogue jars us out of the time period, once again, but the ongoing teaser with Wodan will supposedly become a bigger part of the overall story with the next episode.
The narration by both VA’s was wonderful; I encourage the audiobook over the Kindle version. They earn 5*, and the story earns 4*. Overall, I rate Saxon Max 2 with 4.5*, which I’m rounding to 5*.
