Publisher's summary

Book three in Monica McCarty's USA Today bestselling Highland Guard Trilogy, of which Publishers Weekly raved, "Readers who deplore wallpaper historicals will appreciate not only the romance but McCarty's efforts to go beyond the superficialities of historical Scotland."

Embedded deep behind enemy lines, Arthur “Ranger” Campbell is prized for his razor-sharp senses and his ability to blend into the shadows. But when Arthur infiltrates the clan of the chieftain who murdered his father, his heart is locked on revenge. Inside he faces unexpected resistance from the sweetest of obstacles—a honey-haired siren who is his enemy’s daughter. Intrigued by this ruggedly handsome newcomer to her father’s forces, the vivacious, enchanting Anna MacDougall is a woman whose skill at uncovering deception rivals Arthur’s own.

Though yearning for a quiet life with a good man to love, Anna is drawn to this mysterious knight whose eyes devour her but whose words push her away. As danger, treachery, and the threat of looming war draw them closer into each other’s arms, a warrior made of steel must make a choice from the heart: love or revenge.

Wonderful series!

I love this series and the books cannot be available too soon. The way the author uses eal history and developes such a wonderful romance is unique. I love to listen to Monica McCarty and will continue to look for more!

I am enjoying this series

The only thing that got on my nerves was Anna. Although she was very intuitive and you couldn't get anything passed her, she was a nag. Ranger's character was very enjoyable, and suspenseful, with action. But once again there is treachery, the lies and suspense in the mist of romance. You will enjoy this book.

Other Rangers Stand Up Better to This One

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If one searches for adventure, no; for sex and romance, yes!

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert McNab’s performances?

No, he lacks the necessary authentic Scottish Brogue, rarely did it come through. Rather, he sounded more like one of the cartoon characters on my grandson's shows. Stilted and pompus. He made the heroin sound weak and dependant rather than the stong willed adventerous lady of Monica's creation.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily, I enjoy listening when I drive. If its a long enough drive-one sitting does it, but I like the continuation

Loved this book

Any additional comments?

As the rest of her books in this series, Monica McCarty has brought another book to life. Arthur and Anna's story tugs at your heart. The hard choices both had to make especially Anna. Enjoyed Robert McNab however as in most men the women's voices have a little getting used to. Loved this book.

Mostly Good

I was captivated by both the plot and the rich storytelling about Scottish clan rivalry. I loved these parts of the story and couldn't wait to know what happened next. Unfortunately, there was also parts that made me want to stop listening. 1) Anna was weak and annoying! She repeatedly and shamelessly threw herself at Campbell, despite his overt rejections and attempts to avoid her. No self-respecting person (which Anna was initially portrayed to be) would be THAT desperate. (Frankly, I was surprised that a woman wrote this book.)... 2) the inner musings of Anna and Campbell went long and repetitive. 3) The narrator was unbelievable as 20-something year olds. Also, sex scenes felt creepy - like listening to an old professor read about sex.

An OK story.

I wish Anna had been a stronger character. Didn't like the narrator's voice for Anna. Everytime she spoke to Arthur I visualized her cowering before him as she secretly begged him for a crumb of response. I guess I like stronger women in romance novels. I do like Monica McCarty's other books.

Not my favorite in the series

The Ranger was not my favorite in Monica McCarty's series only because the book didn't seem to be as focused on history. It was more about the ridiculous relationship between the two main characters Arthur and Anna. I found the relationship irritating and distracting from the should be story. Robert McNab, however, is a wonderful narrator. Oh what a voice.
