Publisher's summary

Here are two classics of moral philosophy from one of the most revered Christian voices of our time.

In The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis reflects on society and nature and the challenges of how best to educate our children. He describes what public education should be and how far from this standard modern education has fallen. Lewis eloquently argues that, as a society, we need to underpin reading and writing lessons with moral education.

In The Great Divorce, Lewis presents his vision of the afterworld. A fictional narrator boards a bus on a drizzly English afternoon and embarks on an incredible voyage through Heaven and Hell, where he meets a host of supernatural beings and comes to some significant realizations about the nature of good and evil.

Critic reviews

"These two short works by Lewis are a fine introduction to his eloquent writing, as well as his thought....Robert Whitfield's disciplined and well-modulated voice has an appealingly confident quality." (AudioFile)

Tough going in some parts

The Great Divorce is accessible and excellent, but the second book is hard to follow

One Part Story & One Part Essay

I listened to this after finishing Lewis's Space Trilogy because "That Hideous Strength" was based on subject matter in "The Abolition of Man". Being new to the non-fiction writing of Lewis, I didn't know what to expect. "The Great Divorce" was in story form and I enjoyed listening to the vignettes of the various "ghosts" the main character encountered.

"The Abolition of Man" is essay or lecture form. While the content is interesting and, at times very timely, I found it dry and had more trouble staying focused on the content.

So beautiful

These two books are a remedy, a medicine for the poison of our time. The poison that is within Christianity that sees not the lies and Temptations to sin all around us. It is the poison of a culture that is obsessed with dissection and loses unification, that sees the parts and forgets the whole. Read these books

Classic and definitely equired reading for so-called atheists

This long essay, especially the last two thirds, is among the all time greatest ever. Without God, only might (the capricious whim of the majority or the gurgling in the gullet of the hegemon) makes right.

Both of these books are fantastic.

Divorce is a real neat concept and worth a read. Abolition is real clear on our desire to separate or move past the need of a creator.

Fascinating

The Great Divorce was absolutely fascinating and held my attention to the very end. I loved the reader and the content challenged my traditional ideas about eternity. Great book. The Abolition of Man was a little weighty for me however. More philosophical than I care for.

It's not possible to say enough good things about this audiobook. C.S.Lewis is one of the best authors of all time and probably my favorite. The narrator of these 2 books does a very good job immersing you into "The Great Divorce" and the story will certainly move you. Get this audiobook!

The most exquisite food of thought

This is one of the best selection of philosophy that I’ve ever listened to. The thought is clear the picture is crystal. CS Lewis I have new found mountainous respect for.
