Publisher's Summary

Book two in the Bequin series

Alizebeth Bequin's world has been turned upside-down. Now she must choose who she will follow as Inquisitors Eisenhorn and Ravenor battle to discover the secrets at the heart of Queen Mab.

Listen to it because

The latest chapter in Dan Abnett's Inquisition saga is here, and it's packed with shocking twists and stunning revelations that will change the way you look at the Warhammer 40,000 universe forever.

The story

In the mysterious city of Queen Mab, the forces of light and darkness are locked in a murderous struggle for truth. The dedicated agents of the Holy Inquisition battle with their shadowy counterparts, the infamous Cognitae, to discover the encrypted identity of the enigmatic, all-powerful King in Yellow. Caught at the heart of this struggle is the pariah Alizebeth Bequin. Will she stand with the Inquisition or with the Cognitae that raised her? And if she chooses the Inquisition, will it be the wise but ruthless Ravenor or his rival, the denounced heretic Eisenhorn? Bequin must withstand an onslaught of angels, daemons, and even the monstrous warriors of the Traitor Legions, to unpick the greatest riddle of her life.

The beloved characters of Eisenhorn and Ravenor return, as implaccable adversaries in a novel of esoteric mystery, macabre intrigue, and vivid action, where the revelation of true identity could mean death...or might shake the Imperium to its very foundations.

No spoiler heresy

I've played Warhammer for close to 25 years. I've read most of the books, played all the editions, and love most of it. Eisenhorn and the surrounding stories are the best written Black Library has to offer, and holy $&#e what a cliffhanger Dan!

Penitent please!

I really enjoyed the second book in this series, Dan Abnett definitely took his time with this one but the intricacies of the characters really shines through with the amazing voice work done here. Definitely can't wait for book 3!

Wow

This was absolutely fantastic I've always been a fan of the old lore and anything with space marines so I typically avoid novels that don't include them but I'll have to say the bequin trilogy has to been one of my favorites I've read

Abnett at his peak

Enjoying Eisenhorn enough to get to Ravenor was a great feat. This series too those investigations to a whole other level. With gripping twists and turns, I can honestly say the end was one of the best authorial flourishes Iv had the pleasure of listening to. Black library fans eat your heart out.

Brilliant

I’d give it six stars. Have read/listened to quite a few WH40K novels and though I might be suffering from proximity bias, this is my favorite. This was everything I want from warhammer. Action, mysteries and at least a feeling that the story of the universe is evolving.
That was all about the story itself, the voice acting was very good too.

Best 40k book in yonks

It's got a good story, good characters, some good Grimdank. Dan spent less time describing the tightness of body gloves than he did in Eisenhorn and Ravenor which was nice. Thanks Dan!

A Masterpiece

I stepped into the Bequin series with slight trepidation, not having heard Helen's (the narrator’s) work before and was almost instantly captivated by her performance. Never before have I looked at my audiable browser willing that clock to turn back and there be more story to come.

Penitent, is a seminal work for D.A.. He perfectly courts the 40K tropes, while simultaneously building upon his previous works breathing life into this world. He balances his work between the strength of bolter and blade, before he masterfully allows the true horror of the universe to creep in.

The author stamps his mark on this world, as the setting subtly becomes Victorian London. Accompanying this shift come some charming parallels, be it (spoilers) a caricature of Aleister Crowely, or a Ravengaurd fighting in a “murderous” way. You feel like the author is there, giving you the subtle wink as each of these quirks appear.

My only wish, is that we don’t have to wait so long for the next instalment. However, if it’s this good, it is most definitely worth the wait.

Eisenhorn, Ravenor and now Penitent

This series is as good as both the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series. It provided a perfect balance of things from those two books and some things brand new that fit perfectly into the world.
And the narrator was casted so perfect theres no way I could listen to another narrate any following sequels.. comfortably.
