Publisher's summary

In Robot-Proof, Northeastern University president Joseph Aoun proposes a way to educate the next generation of college students to invent, to create, and to discover - to fill needs in society that even the most sophisticated artificial intelligence agent cannot. A "robot-proof" education, Aoun argues, is not concerned solely with topping up students' minds with high-octane facts. Rather, it calibrates them with a creative mindset and the mental elasticity to invent, discover, or create something valuable to society - a scientific proof, a hip-hop recording, a web comic, a cure for cancer. Aoun lays out the framework for a new discipline, humanics, which builds on our innate strengths and prepares students to compete in a labor market in which smart machines work alongside human professionals.

The new literacies of Aoun's humanics are data literacy, technological literacy, and human literacy. Students will need data literacy to manage the flow of big data, and technological literacy to know how their machines work, but human literacy - the humanities, communication, and design - to function as a human being. Life-long learning opportunities will support their ability to adapt to change.

interesting view of the future of education..

this author suggests some changes to the way universities structure degree programs. because I am a professor at a community college I think only some parts of this work apply to my setting. I enjoyed the perspective provided and will consider some of the suggestions for discussion at my institution.

very insightful and confirms my beliefs

After listening to this book, I feel like I have a firm grasp on the important changes in the job market to know that I made the right decision with my career and education. Northeastern is a gold mine for someone looking to rapidly transition into an emerging industry and technical field.

Education is changing

Easy read finished in two sittings. A few of the points have been touched on in other publications however there is additional insight from a historical perspective and practical application that give this book a twist.

Listen. Fantastic display of organization.

From aim affecting schooling, to technology and the workforce. A small piece of the pie is delivered in complete detail. Joseph doesn’t fuck around. He gets to the point and does so quickly. No circumlocution and whining about the system. He presents statistics and actual plans for action/change. 5 stars. @guidetothegates

Preparing the future generations for the Future

A topic everyone is talking about these days, The upcoming age of Artificial Intelligence and Robots and what will happen before and when this will happen; Dr. Joseph Aoun approaches this subject from a different angle, from the angle of education, learning, and culture.

Robot-Proof, is an easy read to a relatively complicated topic with a clear message and practical resources to anyone involved in education in general.

Highly Recommended!

Succinct and On-point

Aoun may not go far enough in his vision of the future of higher ed, but, in a bureaucratic and outdated industry, his well-reasoned and realistic arguments for the need to change and the direction to get moving in are very important.
