Publisher's summary

Native is about identity, soul-searching, and the never-ending journey of finding ourselves and finding God. As both a citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and a Christian, Kaitlin Curtice offers a unique perspective on these topics. In this book, she shows how reconnecting with her Potawatomi identity both informs and challenges her faith.

Curtice draws on her personal journey, poetry, imagery, and stories of the Potawatomi people to address themes at the forefront of today's discussions of faith and culture in a positive and constructive way. She encourages us to embrace our own origins and to share and listen to each other's stories so we can build a more inclusive and diverse future.

Each of our stories matters for the church to be truly whole. As Curtice shares what it means to experience her faith through the lens of her Indigenous heritage, she reveals that a vibrant spirituality has its origins in identity, belonging, and a sense of place.

Outstanding storytelling

Curtis does an exceptional job giving a window into the dual life of being Christian and native. This is an excellent read that I highly recommend to all!

if you live on the North American Continent...

Read this book. it is simple to understand. The language cannot be misinterpreted to mean anything other than the reality the author brings to life. There is moving and powerful imagery. There are also tough questions. would 100% recommend.

Honest and meaningful

I don’t know if I have the words to adequately describe the beauty of Kaitlin’s words. I can say she taught me a lot about what it means to be an indigenous woman and how I as a Christian can better honor her.

Really intense

I really liked this book, however, if you are a BIPOC who has been traumatized by evangelical Christianity you will be triggered. It was hard for me to listen to this because I have experienced a lot of what she talks about. I had to take breaks to cry. I got really angry and had to stop reading at other times. But it’s really good and necessary to hear whether you’re BIPOC or not especially right now in 2020. However some people may not be ready to confront all the things this book so eloquently calls out.

So so so GOOD!

Worth the credit/cash and then some. Well-written/spoken, organized, thoughtful, calls you out but in a way that's constructive and leaves you in a better place than you came to it. She doesn't just point out problems, her insight leads to ways to connect, understand, grow, and heal. I think this is a book her kids are going to be able to look back on and treasure. I also think this is going in my yearly circulation to revisit and look at myself in its mirror again.

Poetic!

Wow, so beautifully and honestly written. It is like a poem about justice and love that you cannot stop listening too and I am so grateful to have experienced this book and intend to read it again in another season of life to see what new things I learn from it. I definitely recommend!
