Publisher's summary

A “profound and inspiring” collection of ancient indigenous wisdom for “anyone wanting the healing of self, society, and of our shared planet” (Peter Levine, author of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma).

A Penobscot Indian draws on the experiences and wisdom of the First Nations to address environmental justice, water protection, generational trauma, and more.

Drawing from ancestral knowledge, as well as her experience as an attorney and activist, Sherri Mitchell addresses some of the most crucial issues of our day—including indigenous land rights, environmental justice, and our collective human survival. Sharing the gifts she has received from the elders of her tribe, the Penobscot Nation, she asks us to look deeply into the illusions we have labeled as truth and which separate us from our higher mind and from one another.

Sacred Instructions explains how our traditional stories set the framework for our belief systems and urges us to decolonize our language and our stories. It reveals how the removal of women from our stories has impacted our thinking and disrupted the natural balance within our communities.

For all those who seek to create change, this book lays out an ancient world view and set of cultural values that provide a way of life that is balanced and humane, that can heal Mother Earth, and that will preserve our communities for future generations.

Critic reviews

"Sacred Instructions is an important book that synthesizes a wealth of information in an approachable and empowering way. Mitchell’s steady, assured tone and recommendations for action makes this a rewarding book for anyone looking for a way to engage in less conflict-based, more effective community change."—Foreword

“A deeply personal meditation and call to consciousness and transformation, Sacred Instructions challenges the way we see and experience the world around us. For many readers, the book will reveal the first steps toward a process of self-discovery and spiritual awareness that Mitchell shows us must be lived and breathed every day on our own personal journeys of decolonization and patient recovery of an indigenized worldview.” —Robert A. Williams, Jr., chair of the University of Arizona Indigenous People's Law and Policy Program and author of Savage Anxieties

“In this compelling book, Sherri Mitchell helps all of us understand the experience of First Nations peoples and helps us to embody that unique wisdom. She brings forth a broad understanding of cultural and generational trauma in a way that supports deep healing. The wisdom of this courageous book is profound and inspiring. It is recommended for anyone wanting the healing of self, society, and of our shared planet.”—Peter A. Levine, PhD, author of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma

Much needed wisdom clearly shared

I don’t always make it to the end of audio books (I start on a long trip and then don’t finish after I get home). But I’m so glad I kept listening to this wise book. I especially loved the indigenous prophecies at the end that offer Hope at this difficult time.

Essential

One of the most important books I have ever read, especially in these times. Indigenous understanding and guidance may be our salvation.

An important book

Grateful for the wisdom shared in these pages. I particularly love the section on teachers and teachings. This is a book you can come back to and listen again and again, each time picking up different insights. It is very nice to hear the words through Sherri’s voice.

Great book but...

I hate to bring any fellow native people down, but I just couldn't get through this book. The authors voice was so dreary, I felt like she didn't even want to be reading her book lol. The info and wisdom was great, but I usually listen to my audiobooks in the early morning, and Sherri's voice literally was putting me back to sleep. It's not a bad voice at all, she's very soothing actually! It was just so monotone.

Important timely information for each and every human

Thank you Sherri Mitchell for these Sacred Instructions. I appreciate the clarity, breadth and depth of this wisdom. Choosing collaboration and participation, that honors all inhabitants, while stepping away from dominant colonization and destructive behaviors is a necessary powerful invitation.

Thank you also for the beautiful rich glimpse of Native American culture and teachings. This is the message of our time and I will act and I will share it. Deep Gratitude and Appreciation.

wisdom for this age

Sherri has done an excellent job in putting her narrative together. The wisdom of the pre-columbian peoples of North America is to often left out of how we all view the paternalistic culture of the current world. As climate change moves forward and we ignore the teachings of our elders, it is quite possible that humanity may succumb with all the other species in this 6th great extinction.. She gives up some practical guides on making a change in how we view community, spirituality, family and respect.

A woman who is the sage of our time that could bring us back home if we can just awaken. So inspiring and educational in equal measure.
