Publisher's summary

Before she started hosting dinners for Indiana University's Sociology Department at Pans 'N' Pancakes, Robbie never imagined scholarly meetings could be so hostile. It's all due to Professor Charles Stilton, who seems to thrive on heated exchanges with his peers and underlings, and tensions flare one night after he disrespects Robbie's friend, graduate student Lou.

So when Robbie and Lou go snowshoeing the next morning and find the contentious academic frozen under ice, police suspect that Lou might have killed him after their public tiff. To prove her friend's innocence, Robbie is absorbing local gossip about Professor Stilton's past and developing her own thesis on the homicide - even if that means stirring up terrible danger for herself along the way.

awesome mystery

These books get better and better as they go along.
It was a thrilling ride going along with Robby while she sorted out the mystery.

Tasty treat once more

Would you listen to When the Grits Hit the Fan again? Why?

Yes Robbie is like an old friend who u just want to talk to every time and have a meal with.

What other book might you compare When the Grits Hit the Fan to and why?

There really isn't one I could compare with because this is a series that does not depend on gross but depends more on being smart and quick.

Have you listened to any of Laural Merlington’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I need to find more of her performances

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I see Robbie as a person almost and love her relationship with Abbe love we're the story is going.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the next part.

Fun mystery fluff

Keeps you wondering about “whodunnit” to the end, which makes up for the lack of deep character development. Good narration.
Have snacks ready while reading, it makes you hungry with all the cooking and menu descriptions.
I agree with other reviewer Rusty- this is not a political book nor too R rated. There are diverse characters and personalities. Just like the real world. I appreciate that as a reader.

Enjoyable read despite the odd choice of Narrator.

The characters are interesting and well thought out in this series. The mystery of who the bad guy was lasted to the end in all three books for me, though I usually peg them early on. I enjoyed everything about this series except one important thing---the narrator. Sure she did a fine job and each character was uniquely portrayed. Her occasional mispronunciation didn't bother me either. Unfortunately her voice comes across as a much older person, quite elderly in fact, than the heroine is supposed to be. The first time she went out for a long ride on her bicycle I kept having to brush away the elderly woman I had been picturing out of the way and conjure up someone totally different. It was struggle for me throughout the series to maintain a visual of a 27 year old woman when the narrator sounds more like a seventy year old. I almost dismissed the first book because of it, it really bothered me. But, I wasn't able at the time to get a replacement. I stuck with it, joked with my hubby about it and stuck with it. I'm glad I did as all three were very good stories. If you can get beyond the voice as well, you will likely enjoy it. I do recommend it.

Best yet

This series just keeps getting better. Can't wait for the next entry. Great book made even better by a superb narrator, one of the best I've ever listened to. Hope they keep her through all the upcoming books.

Really enjoys this series

I’m really enjoys this series, it gets better with each installment. Maddie Day is able to keep the storyline moving along. Laural Merlington, as always gave a stellar performance as she brought her story to life giving each character their own distinct voice. I highly recommend this book/audiobook and series to cozy mystery fans.

Formulaic

This is a typical mystery that follows the cozy mystery formula. The narrator didn't help. She makes the lead character sound like she's 57 instead of 27. It's not bad, it's just mediocre.
