Publisher's Summary

In South Carolina, a young black man faces the death penalty for the rape and murder of Marianne Larousse, daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the state. It's a case that nobody wants to touch, a case with its roots in old evil, and old evil is private detective Charlie Parker's speciality. But Parker is about to make a descent into the abyss, a confrontation with dark forces that threaten all that Parker holds dear: his lover, his unborn child, even his soul. . .

For in a prison cell, a fanatical preacher is about to take his revenge on Charlie Parker, its instruments the very men that Parker is hunting, and a strange, hunched creature that keeps its own secrets buried by a riverbank: the undiscovered killer Cyrus Nairn. Soon, all of these figures will face a final reckoning in southern swamps and northern forests, in distant locations linked by a single thread, a place where the paths of the living and the dead converge. A place known only as the White Road.

I think I have read all of John Connollys ' books ,and have never been disapointed. The White Road is excellent and in keeping with this authors best. His use of the language is first class, his characters whilst complex are interesting, his plots are perhaps deep, but very compete, The Narrator added to the books enjoyment I look forward to further novels

sorry Paul Birchard, bring back Jeff Harding

Would you consider the audio edition of The White Road to be better than the print version?

no, not even slightly better, and I love the John Connolly tales on audio

What did you like best about this story?

it's yet another excellent John Connolly, and a great story about Louis' background, but I only know that because I've read the print version

How could the performance have been better?

Something about Paul Birchard's voice just didn't sit with me, I'm pleased he only narrated one of the Charlie Parker books!

Any additional comments?

I'll keep the book just so I have the full set, but I really can't listen to the narrator, he's stopped me listening to the books until I re-read the print version!

Marvelous Connolly

Another great book from John Connolly, I have read all the Charlie Parker books and now listening to them, disappointed by narrative by Paul Birchard but still a great listen, looking forward to the next

Dissapointed with Narrating

Another great Charlie Parker story, but I struggled all the way through because of the narrating. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Paul Birchard doesn't do the books justice. And I must admit, I did get quite distracted throughout hearing Louis called 'Lewis'.

Great story very well read.

Not for the faint of heart but a great story and really well read. It's easy to distinguish between characters when they're speaking and this is done really well. Riveting to listen to can't wait to download the next one.

Spooky stuff going on in South Carolina!

As usual the quality of John Connolly's writing draws you into this complex episode in the life of Charlie Parker. One word of warning, this series must be read in order these are NOT stand alone stories. The narration was excellent, the range of accents was impressive. I do not want to discuss the storyline for fear of giving away any of the surprises lying in store for the reader, suffice to say that if you are a fan of this series, you will not be disappointed!

Supernatural horror raises its head

Although Bird has seen dead people in dreams, including his wife and child, it is only in this instalment that raw supernatural events take place. Many in dreams but many unexplained rationally. Great plot and hints of Stephen King during the PI story. Looking forward to the next one.

Slightly disappointed !

The overall story is a good crime fiction but I found the paranormal element a touch unbelievable and this reduced the grittiness of the storyline for me. I marked the narrator down although he was very good. He wasn't the same narrator as in the previous books in this series and his accent changed the dynamics of the characters. Also it took me a while to realise that Lewis (Louis)was the same person as Looey in the previous books.

Excellent thriller

Would you listen to The White Road again? Why?

John Connolly is a very fine writer of supernatural thrillers. His plots are always rooted in reality with the supernatural elements carefully interwoven and never dominant, these are supernatural books for those who don't do fantasy! Above his plots and fine writing it is his cast of well drawn and intriguing characters that will draw you to the whole series.

The White Road

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

No complaints with the presentation

What could John Connolly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This is not the first John Connolly book I have bought so I know there will br violence. However the brutality and sick violence in this book go just too far.

What about Paul Birchard’s performance did you like?

Very good

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Sadness that these things happen

Any additional comments?

Not really, just want to return this one
