Publisher's summary

An innocent man is about to be executed.

Only a guilty man can save him.

For every innocent man sent to prison, there is a guilty one left on the outside. He doesn’t understand how the police and prosecutors got the wrong man, and he certainly doesn’t care. He just can’t believe his good luck. Time passes and he realizes that the mistake will not be corrected: the authorities believe in their case and are determined to get a conviction. He may even watch the trial of the person wrongly accused of his crime. He is relieved when the verdict is guilty. He laughs when the police and prosecutors congratulate themselves. He is content to allow an innocent person to go to prison, to serve hard time, even to be executed.

Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Now nine years have passed. Travis has just been paroled in Kansas for a different crime; Donté is four days away from his execution. Travis suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. For the first time in his miserable life, he decides to do what’s right and confess.

But how can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges, and politicians that they’re about to execute an innocent man?

"John Grisham is about as good a storyteller as we’ve got in the United States these days." ( The New York Times Book Review)

john Grisham knows how to put the reader/listener right there as if witnessing the events themselves.

couldn't finish it...

Normally Grisham grabs you from the first chapter, but the set up for this is really slow and formulaic. I quite after the first few chapters...yawn

Good book, but boring narrator

I love John Grisham's books and to me he is the best storyteller we have today, i have read and listen too 95% of everything he have written so far. However the way a book is read to you is half the story, no dissrespect to Scott Sowers, but i did not enjoy the way he narrate this book. John Grisham and company needs to get Michael Beck to narrate all the books he release. Mr Beck make you feel that you are actually part of the happenings in the book, you can practically taste the food, feel the atmosphere, and smell the fear in the story. This was not as good as it could have been. Get Michael Beck back!!!!

Wow!!!! Am amazing book!

I can't understand where the negative reviews are coming from. This book was incredible. I was so angry at times I could have spit nails. This book makes you hate the people that are supposed to protect us and fight for justice. It really makes you think and wonder about how many other innocent people have been executed. Why are cops allowed to lie in interrogations? Why are the allowed to bully and make up stories? This book shows you that the justice system is anything but just. The real criminals are the abusive cops and sleazy prosecutors. They deserve to rot in prison. John Grisham is a star for taking on controversial issues. This book is worth a credit. The narrator was excellent.
