#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer, and closes in on a shocking suspect—a sitting judge—in “one of the best crime reads of the year.... Bristling with high-tech detail and shivering with suspense.... Worth staying up all night to finish” (Wall Street Journal).

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change.

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law.

He is a judge, in Florida—under Lacy’s jurisdiction.

He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

The Judge’s List is by any measure John Grisham’s most surprising, chilling novel yet.

The story was overall very well written. The narrator was horrible. So horrible that I would lose concentration and would have to go back and reread. The novel would be 100 times better with a different narration.

A great story!

I am a big Mary Louise Parker fan, but didn't like her narration of this book at all. Not sure why she read sooooo slowly, but speeding it up to 1.25 speed made it bearable.

The story was good, but the narration was dreadful

I have read or listened to all of Grisham's books. Listening to this was painful. The person reading sounds like she should be on a suicide watch.
The story was ok. Many lines were repeated throughout book. The characters were not well devoted and not too interesting. Maybe the depressed reader had something to do with making the character's boring. I am getting my money back on this one. I have listened 1000 books and have returned a handful.

Narration horrible. Story ok.

It had me from the beginning. Couldn’t stop listening. It was an oh oh book that kept my interest the entire time. It makes the top of the list in every way.

Best Grisham book EVER

I am having a difficult time following the narrator and you have to listen very closely because she does not do very distinctive characters thus far and I'm not far into the book at all I'm probably still in the first chapter but it's not drawing me in because I don't know who's who most the time. I'm not a professional reviewer I would just say it's sort of monotone.

Narrator Hard to follow

Made it to chapter 7 and then I had to return the book. I bought it based on one person arguing about the narrator saying she was an actress and was darn good at what she does. In this particular instance she uses one monotone voice for all the characters and is just unlistenable. Maybe she can act when she's playing one part but she surely is no narrator.

I should have listened, the narrator is horrible

Had pre-ordered and was not disappointed. Another great John Grisham novel. Will certainly be more careful on the Internet as a result of reading. I might add that it was so good I’ve binged on it the day that it came out and finished it. Loved the voices of the characters. Made you feel like you knew them and you were right there.

Judges list was great!

I read several reviews stating the narration was awful, and I found it to be pretty much true. I didn’t absolutely hate her, but at times I was frustrated at how slowly she was reading. At a few points, I would have to turn it off to take a break before I got too frustrated, and come back to it later. The other thing is, and this gets me, she doesn’t change her voice in any way when she’s speaking as a man. It’s the exact same voice as her female characters, and you can easily get lost in who is talking if you’re not paying close attention. The premise of the book was interesting enough that I finished it.

Ugh, the narration

The storyline was unfortunately predictable. No surprises or twists and turns, and the ending was unsatisfying—it wasn’t horrible, just not smart enough. Also the performance of the Voice talent/narrator/reader, was annoying and hard to follow from one character to the next. I like this actor as an actor, but really disliked the presentation as a reader.

Ho hum

You need to set on 1.2 if you don’t want to claw your eyes out waiting for her to get to her next word! Story is okay but stretches credulity- totally ridiculous that she goes to the bar instead of the FBI, or that the BJC woman, dating the FBI agent can’t figure out who to contact for cross state serial murder. And the fact that the killer comes to her house yet she doesn’t call anyone that she has been discussing the serial murderer with? Very frustrating and detracts from what is otherwise not a horrible premise?

Someone give MLP some coffee!
