The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Don't Hold Your Breath

Editorial reviews
The case of a lifetime has just come across Alex Morrow’s desk. But with a partner like Grant Bannerman brash, confident, and most importantly, male there’s no way she can compete for leadership. Morrow’s greatest and most poignant struggle in Denise Mina’s hostage novel, Still Midnight, is to prove her worth as a detective to the boy’s club at the Criminal Investigation Department in Glasgow. Armed with intelligence, vigilance, and drive, Morrow plunges headfirst into this case, and the mystery genre has rarely seen such a captivating protagonist. Jane MacFarlane’s narration only elevates the sleuthing experience, giving voice and life to the intricacies of Morrow’s character.
A gang of gun-slinging terrorists broke into a seemingly innocent Pakistani family’s modest home demanding that they give up a man named Bob. When the name Bob is met with confusion, the enraged terrorists kidnap the family’s elderly patriarch, Aamir Anwar, and demand an impossible ransom from his family. This is a strange case, as Morrow and her partner ask themselves, “Why would these men target the Anwars, who couldn’t possibly have that kind of money?” Perhaps they had the wrong house, or perhaps it’s the Anwars’ Muslim background that has offended these men, but Morrow knows that getting to the bottom of this case is something she must do to advance her career.
Morrow is a complicated woman who undeniably allows her messy personal life (which is explored significantly in the novel) to affect her work. Nevertheless, she is just as poised as she is self aware as she tackles this case. MacFarlane handles this complicated character beautifully in her narration, allowing hints of doubt and struggle to break through the tough Scottish exterior every now and then. In this regard, Still Midnight is not only a riveting crime novel, but also a thoughtful character study. Suzanne Day
Publisher's summary
Alex Morrow is not new to the police force - or to crime - but there is nothing familiar about the call she has just received. On a still night in a quiet suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, three armed men have slipped from a van into a house, demanding a man who is not, and has never been, inside the front door. In the confusion that ensues, one family member is shot and another kidnapped, the assailants demanding an impossible ransom. Is this the amateur crime gone horribly wrong that it seems, or something much more unexpected?

Girolamo Savonarola was a Dominican friar living in Florence at the end of the fifteenth century. An anti-corruption campaigner, his hellfire preaching increasingly spilled over into tirades against all luxuries that tempted his followers toward sin. These sermons led to the infamous "Bonfire of the Vanities"—a series of fires lit throughout Florence for the incineration of everything from books, extravagant clothing, playing cards, musical instruments, make-up, and mirrors to paintings, tapestries, and sculptures.

Story
On the evening of March 9, 1566, David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, was brutally murdered. Dragged from the chamber of the heavily pregnant Mary, Rizzio was stabbed 56 times by a party of assassins. This breathtakingly tense novella dramatizes the events that led up to that night, telling the infamous story as it has never been told before.

Story
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Story
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Jigsaw Puzzle
I love the way the author always presents the storyline in chunks that gradually fit together. It is stimulating and keeps my mind alert as I try to work out what the final picture will look like. The narrators for this author are always amazing. A total package!

Still Can't Decide
I'm pretty ambivalent about this book. It was good, but.... yea, doncha just hate that... At one point in the book there was a comment about how the language of some people could "make a porn star blush." Well, some of the language in this book would fit that category. The story itself was excellent, though it did move around quite a bit in time and space, but after a few minutes you get used to it. The narrator, Jane MacFarlane, was excellent! Have never heard her read anything before, but she did an excellent job with this one. You have to understand that I was born and raised in the US, so my ear for Scottish accents may be way off, but Ms. MacFarlane was wonderful creating the atmosphere and accents of the Scottish setting for this book. All in all, I mostly liked it, and will probably listen to the next book, but the language and the fast scene changes were a bit much, and tended to confuse rather than enlighten. But, as we all know, that's just my opinion. <><

First book I’ve read by Denise Mina and I really enjoyed it. The reader, Jane MacFarlane, is absolute perfection!

Jumpy story line
I don't like it when the author shifts a scene and the narrator keeps reading like its the same paragraph. It takes a minute to figure who's talking. None of the characters are in anyway like able. Maybe it's a cultural difference but I spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out what was going on.

I'm a Fan
Would you listen to Still Midnight again? Why?
After a long long time maybe. I only listen to non-fiction and classics more than once.
What other book might you compare Still Midnight to and why?
Not fair, Denise Mina is unique. Her locations, her characters can't be met anywhere else I know of.
What does Jane MacFarlane bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her beautiful (appropriate) Scottish accent and a subtle way of reading I really appreciate. I hate the drama kings and queens. I want to hear a story. I don't want to hear someone emote.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Don't want to spoil the experience for anyone. There were a lot of great moments and lot of moving ones, not sentimental, just really deep.
Any additional comments?
I've said it, I'm a fan. If you don't like naturalistic characters and a little squalor with your stories, you won't like most of Denise Mina. I also highly recommend "Deception." I don't think it's available here. Don't bother with abridgments. The FLAVOR of her work IS her work.

The ending, or lack thereof, left me disappointed
The characters were well-developed and real. The plot interesting. I was excited, thinking I had found a new author to follow and then, all of a sudden, the.
Yes, that's what it felt like. I even went back and rewound, thinking I must have missed something. To me the story just hung there. It was so well written until that moment that I might just go ahead and give Ms. Mina another try...but not quite yet.

Still Midnight
This is the first book I have read (listened to) by Denise Mina. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the characters in the story as well as the plot. Jane MacFarlane has a pleasant voice. I will be purchasing more Denise Mina books on audible.

Excellent & I am very discriminating.
Wow. Incredibly well done, only Ann Cleeves does it better, and honestly her books are just different. So very happy to find a new (to me) writer of such talent.
