Publisher's Summary

Split Second is the first in the gripping King and Maxwell series by best-selling author David Baldacci.

When something distracts Secret Agent Sean King for a split second, it costs him his career and presidential candidate Clyde Ritter his life. But what stole his attention? And why was Ritter shot?

Eight years later Michelle Maxwell is on the fast track through the ranks of the Secret Service when her career is stopped short: presidential candidate John Bruno is abducted from a funeral home while under her protection.

The similarity between the two cases drives Michelle to reopen investigations into the Ritter fiasco and join forces with attractive ex-agent King. The pair are determined to get to the bottom of what happened in those critical moments.

Meanwhile, high-ranking members of the legal system and key witnesses from both cases are going missing. King is losing friends, colleagues and clients fast, and his ex-lover, Joan Dillinger, is playing curious games - she wants Sean back, but she also owes him for something....

Split Second is followed by Hour Game, Simple Genius, First Family, The Sixth Man and King and Maxwell.

    "Baldacci at his best"

Thoroughly enjoyed this story which was fast paced. Was listening to it while working in house and found myself sitting down to listen to the story rather than switch it off in order to vacuum. Narration good and to me it was Baldacci at his best.

    Story
    "Convoluted"

I am a Baldacci fan so am maybe not the best critic. I loved this book which is the first in the Maxwell series and puts into context how they came to work together. The plot is extremely convoluted but comes together well at the end, always a bonus!

Baldacci does it again ! One president assassinated and another kidnapped. FBI charged with finding out who is behind the plots to do this

    Story
    "not his finest hour"

a more preposterous plot would be hard to imagine. no threat no menace just a camp egotistical dullard as the supposed Mastermind. l will avoid this series. pity, some of his other stuff is moderately entertaining.

    "Great read"

Always enjoy a Baldacci, particularly the King and Maxwell series. Only problem was glitches in the recording - jumpy at times/repeated sentences. Good story though

"great story less than great performance"

the story itsslef was really good however the narrator's performance left a lot to be desired.
he sounded bored and had no get and and go for the book. as well as that the editing left choppy areas and a lack of audio every now and then.

    Story
    "Boring."
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I was hoping to find a good series I could get into. I got up to chapter 99 and could go no further. The story is slow and mundane, the characters have zero depth and the narrator sounds so bored with what he's reading that it makes a boring book even more boring! The narrator also sounds slightly sarcastic which makes hearing the way the book is supposed to be quite difficult and if there is any depth in the book it would be hard to reach through his slightly camp, off-hand way of reading it.

In fact, it may be a better book than it sounds, but the narrator is so bad it is totally hidden by his sneering, bored tone.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Baldacci again?

    Maybe with a different narrator.

What didn’t you like about Scott Brick’s performance?

    See above. Terrible.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Split Second?

All the scenes seemed boring except one or two.

    Any additional comments?

Would like to return this book.
