Publisher's Summary

In one hand small-time crook Stokes holds a backpack stuffed with someone else's money--$350,000 of it.

In the other hand, Stokes has a cell phone, which he found with the money. On the line a little girl he doesn't know asks, "Daddy? Are you coming to get me? They say if you give them the money, they'll let you take me home."

From best-selling author James Hankins comes a wrenching story of an unscrupulous man torn between his survival instincts and the plight of a true innocent. Faced with the choice, Stokes discovers his conscience might not be as corroded as he thought.

"The end made it worth it"
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not especially, I was interested in the story, but there weren't a lot of surprises or twists and turns as we went. I think there was a good amount of building tension as we got to the end of the story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The end. I can't say why, but the end is what made me like this book more than I would have expected.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did breeze through this book pretty quickly, even though there were some graphic parts that made me cringe.

"Shady Cross: A Case of Redemption and Sacrifice"

If you are looking to be entertained with a good amount of suspense, then you will more than likely love this novel just like I did. The story captures your attention right away and the suspense starts to build from the first sentence and continues to build right up until the heart breaking ending. I had hoped for a "happy ever after" type ending, but I trust the author's ending which really made me think more highly of the hero.

This story's hero does not start out as hero material. As a matter of fact, I thought that I might not like him because he was a bit despicable in the first few paragraphs.... but I was soon (very soon) rooting for him.... especially after he started to connect with the little girl in the story.

At the end of the day, this story is about redemption and the ultimate sacrifice. There are numerous moments in the story where the hero has to rethink his strategies, motivations, and actions which lead to plot twists and left me on the edge of my seat. This is a true "page turner" and "hard to put down" listen.

The narrator is very good.... This is my first listen to this narrator. I will definitely look for other stories narrated by him. He performed the story exceptionally well. He did not just read the story, he performed the story which I think helped to elevate the story to 4 or 5 stars...

    Highly Recommend.... great entertainment!

    "I'm with Richard Delman (again)"

When I purchased this (on sale) I didn't realize it was by the same author as "Brothers & Bones" which I thoroughly disliked and quit about 1/3 of the way through. I didn't realize it until after I had decided that I was wasting my time with an unlikeable protagonist doing very unlikely things. It is going back right after they post this review. There are many, many, many great mystery/thriller writers out there - maybe Mr. Hankins will become one, but I'm not going to try any more of his books.

    Story
    "Funny, poignant, kept me guessing"

I read "The Prettiest One" before this novel, and while it was pretty good, I liked this one much better.

There is much more humor in this novel; Hankins' capable writing adds funny bits regularly throughout the book that help to flesh out his characters. Bon Shaw's narration is terrific, and by pacing and tone of voice, he adds a dimension to the humor that you wouldn't get if you'd read the book.

The premise was clever, with a hero who is definitely more "anti" than hero, and there were enough twists and turns along the way that I couldn't guess what was going to happen next.

Surprisingly, there is a sad but satisfying aspect to the story. Surprising because genre novels don't usually elicit much emotion from me, sad because ... well, you'll find out why ... and satisfying because it was exactly right -- the only way the story could be told.

All in all, this novel is well worth a credit.

I ended up enjoying the listen even though it seemed to bog down in the middle. N'er-do-well guy decides to do the right thing and a romp of unfortunate incidents ensues. The ending surprised me.

I especially liked the premise of the book. There were enough twists in the plot to keep the reader engaged. It was an excellent listen.

This book takes a not so likable character and turns him into one you're rooting for.
    The narration was excellent.

    Story
    "Action-thriller with a bad-guy protagonist"

This is an action-thriller with a protagonist we don't really like very much. Kinda uncommon, actually.

It starts off in such a way that you wonder why the main character acts the way he does - it isn't really believable that he would do anything other than take the money and run, but... if you can suspend disbelief on just that one little thing, the rest of the story is pretty logical, fast-paced and hard to put down.

The author does spend some time throughout the novel trying to justify the main character's behavior (i.e. he has a daughter of his own, and his father was abusive) and I think, by the end when he was questioning himself about why he made the choices he did, it really does make sense.

Lots of over-the-top violence (not graphic though, just extreme) and lots of action. I quite enjoyed the story and will look for more books by this author. For those of you who are familiar with Jack Reacher, this guy is kinda like a "bad" version of Jack - a bad version who wants to redeem himself...

The narration was unobtrusive (i.e. I wasn't really aware it was being read to me). There is no sex and I didn't notice much swearing. Really, it was very much like Child's Reacher - lots of violence but nothing terribly graphic or offensive.

This book spins a web, just when you think you know how it's going to end Hankins adds another twist. It was almost exhausting to read but definitely hooked me and reeled me in!
