Publisher's Summary

Five days ago, aspiring crime novelist Jason Swike awoke chained to the wall of a run-down horse stable, convinced he would soon die at the hands of Crackerjack, the infamous serial killer who had terrorized the residents of Massachusetts for the past year - capturing and tormenting men, painting whimsical designs on their faces before shattering their bones and ending their lives. Just when death seems inevitable, Jason, with the help of another captive, manages to kill the madman and escape.

Hailed as a hero, Jason reaps the benefits of his newfound fame: a book deal, a possible reconciliation with his estranged wife, and reward money he can use to pay for his son's costly medical treatments. But he soon realizes the nightmare that began in the deserted stable is far from over, as he is drawn into a twisted game where the darkest terror may not be the psychopath manipulating his every move, but what Jason may have to do to survive...

A great listen!

A clever story even if a bit gruesome narrated by a talented reader. Well worth your time!

Good but could have been better...

This is my first Hankins book. The plot is unique. It has has written a story about a twisted, dark killer. Overall, I enjoyed this book but the story would have benefited from tighter writing or a different editor. It almost stalled out in the middle just because one of the main characters was overlooking a simple idea to try to help his problem. The longer the story went on the more I almost gave up. It also kept repeating some of the same thought over and over. At the end it picks up enough I was able to overlook these issues. I liked it enough I'll try another Hankins book.

The narration is great. The audio recording is quality. I think the narrator has made the story better. Shaw was able to really bring personality to the characters. Especially the crazy killer.

I would advise saving a credit for a different book. You can get the Audible on Amazon if you have kindle unlimited for $1.99. The story is a good find at this price.

Hankins and Shaw (R C Bray) together are Wonderful

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! It's another one of Hankins gut twisting suspense thrillers.

Have you listened to any of Bon Shaw’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I really like Bon Shaw aka R C Bray. It's been a real treat for me this week since this is the second book by authors I like that he narrates in one week. I would love if he did more narrating of mystery books.

Any additional comments?

This is a suspense thriller that has the protagonist in a lose/lose situation that he feels helpless not being able to control. Jason Swike wakes up after being chained to a barn wall for days. He believes that he and another captive have killed a serial killer but he's in for a surprise. The serial killer has a partner and he either wants Jason's participation as his new partner or he wants to kill him and his family. It's a roller coaster ride with twists and turns all the way to the end. And don't forget Jason has an estranged wife in a wheelchair and a son with very expensive medical issues.
I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this book.

Not believable

I finished the book because I was curious how it would end. And I hoped the story would become more plausible. Unfortunately, it did not.

I felt little emotional connect. Mainly because the only two likeable people in the book were the main character's son and best friend.

When the story started it wasn't what I expected. The storyline was interesting and I couldn't wait to continue listening. The narrator was very good. I enjoyed it immensely. Will be looking for more stories by this author

A very intense suspense thriller

It has been a great week for new releases including new novels by Scott Pratt, Daniel Silva, Marc Cameron, Natalie Barelli, and this one By James Hankins. The Inside Dark completes my reviews of these books although my review of Daniel Silva's House of spies remains trapped in Audible's review approval system.

The Inside Dark is a terrific suspense thriller. Narrator Bon Shaw, a pseudonym for R.C Bray, does a great job. I recommend this novel for anyone that likes very intense suspense.

Ummm. What they said ...

Boy this is a tough one. My primary interest in an audiobook is that it hold my attention for the duration. This book did that. Why, I don’t know. There were so many holes in this story. The concept is great - very unique actually - could have been great. the execution was not so great. Problems w point of view, problem liking the protagonist, problems understanding why in the world the protagonist would do what he does, think what he does... police procedural problems ... the book itself is a hot mess. Somehow - maybe because of the narrator, i didn’t have to eject early. I have listened to 2-3 books / week for the last 10 years - almost all are suspense novels.
