Publisher's Summary

When pirates attack a cargo ship off the Somalian coast and one of them is found to be a British-born Pakistani, MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle is brought in to establish how and why a young British Muslim could go missing from his family in Birmingham and end up on board a pirate skiff in the Indian Ocean, armed with a Kalashnikov. After an undercover operative connected to the case turns up dead in a shipping office in Athens it looks like piracy may be the least of the Service’s problems...

Critic Reviews

"This is something rare: the spy novel that prizes authenticity over fabrication." (Mail on Sunday)

Disappointing

The writing is lazy. Characters are shallow and undeveloped, and plot developments are telegraphed miles in advance, as well as not being very plausible. And, for all her inside knowledge, the sense of being conducted through a secret world by an insider is not a patch on either Le Carre in one direction or Andy McNab/Chris Ryan in the other.

Wonderful listening

A very gripping story that is fully rounded, even to the very last word. Thank you

Exciting and believable

This is a really good book with a busy but easy to follow plot that comes together well in an exciting conclusion. Although Julia gets some criticism about the narration, I find a woman imitating male accents a whole lot better than men trying to be women. But I guess two narrators would probably work better. If you have not tried any of these books this would be a good one to start with and would probably see you back for more. Ash

A good page turner

Would you listen to Rip Tide again? Why?

No, I wouldn't listen to it again. The story was fairly predictable and there is nothing to be gained by listening to it again.

What other book might you compare Rip Tide to, and why?

Any selection of spy novels

Would you listen to another book narrated by Julia Barrie?

Not if I could help it. I felt her narration was feeble

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No

Any additional comments?

The narration of this story spoiled It for me. I nearly stopped listening after a couple of chapters. Why do women sound so "breathy" and gentile when narrating a story? It happens on the radio as well and it puts my teeth on edge. I am sure the heroine of this book did not speak in the manner the narrator portrayed. Her attempt at an American accent was laughable.

Good story very bad recording quality

Really enjoyed this story as with other Stella Rimington books.

However, the standard of recording was very poor and muffled sounding.

But for my enjoyment of the story and the performance of the narrator I would have returned it.

For the record I am using good quality headphones and the enhanced standard recording of the audiobook download and have not had this problem with any of the several other recordings that I have listened too.

Nicely read.

This is well read by the narrator. The accents and characters are well done.

The story is good. If you've enjoyed previous Stella Rimington novels, you should enjoy this too.
