Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Not the usual Harry Hole :-(
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes. He should have written a Harry Hole book!
If you’ve listened to books by Jo Nesbø before, how does this one compare?
Harry Hole was missing in action most of the time.
Did John Lee do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Okay.
Could you see Police being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No. Not this book.
Any additional comments?
I was surprised at this book. I think he just wrote it as a filler for the money. It's like he didn't take the time. If he's going to put the Harry Hole brand on it, then let him write a Harry Hole novel.

"Police" is 5 stars and then some!
Would you listen to Police again? Why?
All of the Harry Hole books are 5 star -- but this one tops them all. I highly recommend this entire series -- if you start in the middle of the series, say # 5, you will go back to #1 because you don't want to miss out on each of these terrific stories.

Never Disappointed
Jo Nesbo delivered another masterpiece. The narrator Lee is perfect because he didn't miss a beat. Best storyteller ever, kept my attention from the start to finish. I want more of detective Hole. Brilliant!!!

tense storytelling with a lot of red herrings
Thrilling and well-plotted storytelling but certain improbabilities mar the novel and there is a lot of needlessly gross violence

It ain't pretty but it's Harry
When Harry Hole goes out and buys a bottle, I check into rehab...
By now you've gotten to know Harry better than your first ex wife and probably would do better with him castaway on an island... Nesbo convolutes this story just right so that only enough of the good guys get away and enough of the bad guys get whacked. But what was that lingering fear??? It's still there.
I stayed up late a number of nights only taking shallow breaths waiting for the next scene.
Bravo... times ten to the third...

Another Awesome Harry Hole novel
Where does Police rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
"Police" is among my favorite audiobooks.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The author, Jo Nesbo, wrote a thriller with new and unpredictable story lines.
What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator obviously studied the meaning of each thing each character says. He is such a good actor and vocal talent. I can have trouble remembering characters when they have foreign-sounding names. John Lee's intonations make it easy for me, and most enjoyable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I feel moved by the compassion I sense toward characters that to the outside world might seem insignificant. For example, I experience a sense of loss when a certain person dies, even though his own family members had said he could "rot."
Any additional comments?
I am glad for my membership to audible.com because listening to the books by Jo Nesbo is one of the most reliably enjoyable experiences I have. Thank you!

The best one yet! But why not Robin Sachs?
Would you consider the audio edition of Police to be better than the print version?
No. But only because I'm not used to this narrator. I had to check out the book too, just to review that the names he was reading were the ones I was used to hearing.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Of course, Harry had always been my favorite in the series, but I guess now it will have to be Baete Lonn. Or will it? Ha ha.
Would you listen to another book narrated by John Lee?
He is a good narrator, but I've listened to the whole series read by Robin Sachs for the most part. John Lee had more of a WW II "... AND WHAT ABOUT OUR BOYS IN THE PACIFIC...." type of news reporter tone.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The one thats already been used somewhere. 'He's back. Or is he?"
Any additional comments?
Highly recommended!

Jo Nesbo great, But John Lee : (
Any additional comments?
So Jo Nesbo messes with your mind like he only can and it's great. the problem is the narrator John Lee. Now I've listened to many stories narrated by John Lee and they were great. It's just that we are listening to a book about cops in Norway and all of a sudden you get this lilting Welch accent from one of the main characters. It's just horrible! it's SOOO out of place! Where is Robin Sachs? Now he has the right accents. A narrator can make or break a story. Choose better publisher!!!

Good Story - Narrator Miscast
Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series is great. John Lee's narration doesn't really work here. A different narrator would have made the story better.
