Publisher's summary
Steve Farris is an unexceptional middle-aged architect with an extraordinary past: When he was 9, his father came home one evening and coolly murdered his mother, brother, and sister before vanishing off the face of the earth. Steve has coped mainly by blotting out the terrible memories, but when writer Rebecca Soltero arrives to interview him about his father, he is forced to reawaken the horrors of his childhood.
As Rebecca takes him back, probing his memory, unexpected new facts are revealed with disturbingly shocking parallels to his current situation. Steve knows that if he is to find out whether he too is heading down the road to tragedy, he must discover the truth about his past.

But with his acceptance at UC Berkeley, he realizes the extent - and the risks - of his singular gifts. California in the '70s is a seduction, opening Milo's eyes to the allure of both ambition and indulgence. The year is 2004: Lina Sparrow is an ambitious young lawyer working on a historic class-action lawsuit seeking reparations for the descendants of American slaves. The year is 1852: Josephine is a 17-year-old house slave who tends to the mistress of a Virginia tobacco farm - an aspiring artist named Lu Anne Bell. It is through her father, renowned artist Oscar Sparrow, that Lina discovers a controversy rocking the art world: Art historians now suspect that the revered paintings of Lu Anne Bell, an antebellum artist known for her humanizing portraits of the slaves who worked her Virginia tobacco farm, were actually the work of her house slave, Josephine.

Unredeemable Acts.
They remain unredeemed in this dark struggle of a story.
Do not expect to get involved in the plot the way you would in an ordinary mystery. Don't expect to enjoy the characters, or like them, or want to know them better, or stay with them. Try to remember that this isn't a true story, but just a novel, even though you can't understand why someone would write a novel like this.
This story of the surviving son of a family murdered by his own father could be a life-changer for some of us. It's so important to remember that when you find truth, make sure you do it in time.
