Publisher's Summary

It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she's ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart 18 years ago. Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her.

But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable. As Kat's hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved - her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained.

With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there. Read by Kerry Shale

Great Storyline

Where does Missing You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Harlan Coben's books tend to follow a familiar formula but it's a good formula. I'd rate this book in the top 10% of audio thrillers I've heard.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kat obviously. The whole story revolved around her.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was very good generally apart from making many of the male characters sound like morons for some inexplicable reason.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I would have were that possible. I ended up listening to it over about 3 days because of work commitments.

Any additional comments?

Great Story, Characters you cared about and heart pounding ending. The only drawback was the weird drawls some of the male characters were given.

Gripping

I think this is my favourite Harlan Coben so far, I found myself glad I had a long drive so that I could listen uninterrupted. There were some gruesome bits that I didn't like, but happily for me not too many. The writer really jacked up the suspense and my heart was pounding in places and I had to make a conscious decision not to drive too fast!

The narrator's treatment of most of the male characters was weird though. They were generally portrayed as dumbass, deadbeat types, even when they weren't. There were some male characters that he got really well, so it's even stranger that he made the decision to go with those other portrayals in the way that he did. However, other than this he was a great reader.

Narration so bad had to give up

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Started this and had to give up the narration. Is so bad it's like listening g to the Simpsons or be is and buthead just awful could not get into this at all due to narration thank goodness for the return feature with audible may be a good book but not a good audible book

What was most disappointing about Harlan Coben’s story?

Could not get past the narration

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The most problematic thing about it

Another can't put it down!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

With reservations.superb story, but poor narration.

What other book might you compare Missing You to, and why?

I think this plot was unique. I am really into crime / thrillers I thought this was a really up to date 21 century crime.

What didn’t you like about Kerry Shale’s performance?

Me Shale has a very pleasant voice. What really put me off was his ' male character voices' they sounded as they were all junkies. I can't understand how he got the women so right and the men so very, very wrong. I really had to grit my teeth to enable me to finish the story.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love down under

Any additional comments?

Great story such a pity about the reader.

Dreadful narration ruins good story

What disappointed you about Missing You?

This is probably a great story, most of Coben's are. However the narrator's portrayal of every male in the story is just appalling and destroys it. I stopped listening after a few chapters because I simply couldn't stand it any more. Why does he give every male character a whining, snivelling, high pitched nasal unpleasant voice? I have heard him on other stories and he doesn't do this, so why here? Audible, you should get him to rethink his performance and re-record, or find someone else.

If you’ve listened to books by Harlan Coben before, how does this one compare?

Don't know, couldn't finish it.

How could the performance have been better?

Get rid of the whiney voices for all the male characters.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Maybe, never found out. Perhaps I will read it rather than listen to it.

Any additional comments?

Please act on my suggestions.

Such a shame narrator spoilt it!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend the book, but would think twice about the audio version which is a shame.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator really needs to work on alternate voices for his characters. A lot of the voices were the same and they sounded either drunk, under the influence of something, or as thick as two short planks (even when the characters in the book were none of the above)

Not his best

Harlan Coben used to be one of my favourite thriller writers but I have found his last couple of books to be rather disappointing. This is better but certainly not one of his best. It didn't grip me in the way his early novels did, I found the plot pretty slow and drawn out and had little interest in any of the characters. However, it is worth a listen as Coben still writes better than many of his contemporaries. As previous reviewers have mentioned Kerry Shale's narration is bizarre. On the whole he narrates well but his male voices are like cartoon characters - unrealistic and laughable.

Brilliant

Super book if you like this genre. Had me hooked from the start. Lots of intrigue and suspense. Didn't want to stop listening as I had to find out what happened next.

A 5 star listen

I have enjoyed other Harlan Coban novels, but this one was the best so far. It has great characterisation, a twisting intricate plot all performed beautifully.

Nowhere near up to his usual standard

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I really really tried to like this book but I've given up well before the end. Terrible story, absolutely awful narration, very very disappointing.

Characters

Characters sounded like something out the Simpsons. Storyline would suit a teenager . Performance was very mediocre.

Struggling to finish!

There's still seven hours of listening to go but the character voices are so terrible that I'm struggling to finish the book and why would you have a male narrator when the main character is a female? Sorry, I'm sure the story is good but I'll read the rest myself.

Must listen!

Was unsure at the start, but I've listened to a number of harlens books now and trust where it was heading. I'm glad I did. Was a overly complicated story but very satisfying. I would highly recommend.
