Publisher's Summary

When two hikers disappear, their Maine hometown blames the blinding storms. But the truth is far more sinister. Unaware of the danger, tabloid photographer Jayne Sullivan follows an anonymous tip to rural Maine to find the most reclusive sculptor in the art world. Instead, she finds sexy, mysterious handyman Reed Kimball — and a small town full of fatal secrets.Five years ago, Reed buried his homicide detective career along with his wife. But when a hiker’s body is discovered, the local police chief asks Reed for help. Why was a Celtic coin found under the remains? And where is the second hiker? Avoiding the media, Reed doesn’t need a nosey photographer snooping around. But when Jayne is attacked, her courage makes him want to risk everything to protect her…and to find a determined and desperate killer.

    Story
    "Enjoyable Mystery, but predictable"

After a troubled past, Jayne is in search of a photo opportunity with a reclusive wood sculptor to help support her family when medical debts pile up. What she finds is a brooding ex-cop, a new stalker and the mystery of a celtic coin found under the body of a hiker. This is an enjoyable story, but not a memorable one. The narrator brings this story up to 4 stars for me and I'd happily listen to Scott Schumaker again. Worth a credit? No. The price is low enough to avoid the use of a credit, especially (at the moment) if you pay out for a Kindle Edition and take advantage of the special $1.99 cost.

"Horrible Narration, Not A Great Story!"

The story was just okay. Extremely predictable, unrealistic, written poorly, and the narrator's depiction on the female voices was awful! They sounded like some cliched damsel in distress! Made me cringe to listen and I found myself thinking of the way I would have written differently to make it better rather than the corny wording and overuse of big words when simple can have a bigger impact.

    "A-W-F-U-L narrator!! Be warned!!!!!!!!!"

I've never given a bad review for a book. Usually, if I don't care for a book I skip over doing the review as I have read severAl "poor" reviews on books that I actually enjoyed so I figure I'll let the next reader decide. But the narrator for this book was SO TERRIBLE that I had to say something because his voice for the female role was so distracting and annoying I had to warn the next listener. His narration of the female voices was so comical....it reminded me of my 9 year old grandson pretending to be a girl. It truly made me.cringe every time I heard him....which, since the book was about a female, was more often than not. It totally distracted from the story....I had to stop and start several times because I just could not listen without rolling my eyes. I've loved all of melinda Leigh books I've listened to before, but I will NEVER LISTEN TO ANOTHER BOOK NARRATOR BY THIS GUY!! I suggest people listen to the sample before they purchase this audio....to be sure you can tolerate 9 hours of high pitched whiney female voices.....otherwise, just read the book instead!

This has to be one of her best. The narrator was great. Lots of intrigue and believable.

    "Okay."

Overall, the storyline is compelling. I think I may have read it for myself because the narrator made the heroine sound...whinny. Just irritating.

"Better than I expected..new to the author."
What made the experience of listening to Midnight Exposure the most enjoyable?

The narrator did a fine job so I could feel like I could get involved with the story and not annoyed by the characters because of how they are voiced verses the actual characters virtues or lack thereof.

I tend to only offer written reviews (not just stars) if the narrator is either very good or very bad.

    "Chilling!"

I read this through Kindle Unlimited so I don't know that I'd necessarily have chosen this book otherwise. I'm glad I did! The story starts out with scene that keeps you guessing. I stayed up late to find out what would happen! The bad guys are SUPER creepy. My only complaint is that I feel like the story was a bit long.

    "Never a dull moment.."
    Any additional comments?

Really good book. Love, love, loved Reed and Jayne. And there was just enough angst for it not to get stupid with it.
AND Scott was just awesome!!! A 17 year old that wasn't a complete and total jerk. Authors who make their teen asses aren't doing themselves any favors.
I was sorry about Hugh and really saw no point in that happening. Doug Lang was a miserable wretch. And I was glad that Jed didn't die. Nathan and his uncle Aaron were really whacked.
A great read with just enough sexual tension and sex to make it interesting.

As to the narrator: Ummm.. What can I say? He wasn't really horrible but his womens voices did kinda suck. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to him again but I wouldn't NOT buy a book because he's the narrator, either.

    "So bad..."

...I couldn't wait for the book to end just to vent how terrible it was. It got two stars because I was curious enough to listen to the end. Schumaker's narration was overall good, female voice not so good.
The writing was like a bad Harlequin Romance (which may be an oxymoron), but could inspire any hack to think they could write - since an illiterate high schooler could probably write better drivel.
The characters were stereotypical and so shallow as to not leave a puddle. There is zero detecting, or intelligence in this book, just the main characters sighing over each other and going through the typical misunderstandings that are quickly resolved. Listening to this (at 1.5x just to get through it) was torture. I will avoid any book by this author (even if she learns to write and gets five stars in the future) on principle.

"Story was great, narrator was a love, hate!"

The story and characters are great! The narrator changing his voice when speaking in the female roll was horrible. It always sounded like they were whining and a person who smokes 10 packs a day sounds better. If you want male and female voices then have a male and female be the narrator.
