Publisher's summary

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh comes the first thrilling novella in the Rogue Justice series.

When Detective Seth Harding responds to shots being fired, he faces a familiar sight: a double homicide. However, he is shocked to find a young boy chained in the basement. The terrified child refuses to speak, but Seth knows he is the key to something sinister.

Reluctantly, Seth calls the only social worker he trusts with the traumatized boy - his wife. Carly is recovering from her own trauma suffered on the job, but she can't turn away from this case, not from another child in trouble. With torrential rain bearing down, threatening to isolate their little town in a killer flood, Seth and Carly know the best way to keep the boy safe from danger is to take him back to their farm.

But danger is as relentless as the storm. And it's following them all the way home.

New novella from Melinda Leigh

Melinda Leigh follows her four Rogue River Novellas series with the first book in her new Rogue Justice series. The two series have exactly the same characters and the same setting, so Rogue Justice series is merely a continuation of Rogue River. The novellas are set in the real sparsely populated Rogue River and Rogue Valley region of southern Oregon. However, Rogue County and the name of the small town are fictitious. The protagonists are married couple Seth and Carly Harding. Carly comes from the leading family in the county where her dad was sheriff and her brothers are in law enforcement. Her husband is a detective. Her mom is the stabilizing force in the family and in the county.

The series are very family focused, but the crimes are real and horrible. Think of the two series as solid police procedurals with strong elements of mystery and suspense, and also with a strong family flavor. I enjoy Melinda Leigh's Rogue novellas and recommend these 3 hour audio books. Kate Rudd does a fine job of narrating.

So dumb.

The characters were weak and the women Whitney and needy. The narration made me dislike her even more.

Just another day in Solitude

This novella keeps you guessing from the start. Lots of drama and a wee but of romance. Recommend this series.

What happened?

I keep waiting for more to happen at the end. I had some questions about what happened to the boy, Uncle and his father? Needed everything tied up and finished.

sad face

I usually love stories by Melinda Leigh but I just didn't care for this one, the choice of narrators was also unfortunate.

Good story, Dialogue Not So Much

I love a good short story As the author must understand the rules and pros for writing one. This was a good one and a steal at $2. Unfortunately, some reviewer’s do not understand Or don’t remember what a short stories format should be hence some negative reviews. I do not know if this couple is a series or not but if it is it’s a good one. I gave this one a try because I wanted to see if the narrator got better and she did in fact, the second time l listened to this book. This authors dialogue needs improvement at times it can get too mushy or cheesy not sure if it’s just word selection because the sentiments are good. I did try her Bree series and unfortunately one of my favorite narrators just didn’t bring the series home.
Were my comments of help?
