Publisher's summary

A serial killer is on the loose in San Diego, and he has a most unusual M.O.: with each kill, he leaves behind objects with unclear meanings. Most of the recent killings are centered near Kendra Michaels' home and office, so it comes as no great surprise when the FBI shows up at her door.

The investigators soon make a startling discovery: the left-behind objects are actually souvenirs of other unsolved serial murder cases in various US cities. And the new cases feature "holdback" characteristics of the other murders unknown to the general public. Kendra realizes that the killer has come to challenge and taunt her.

The investigators become his newest targets, even as Kendra slowly begins to suspect that one of them may be the killer himself. She must find the killer as the body count rises, and to do so she relies on her own "dream team" of agent-for-hire Adam Lynch and private investigator Jessie Mercado. They must risk everything to defeat a psychopath whose terrifying plan is years in the making.

Characters

I know Kendra is the main character, but without Lynch, it wouldn't matter. I love Jesse too. Olivia is good, her mother not so much. So don't have her in the picture much, if at all. Her character is annoying.
Keep Kendra and Lynch together as forever partners, lovers and maybe more. The drama is the main point but love and a savvy duo is exciting and attractive. It will bring me back for every book you write about them. Thanks

Iris Johansen has outdone herself once again!

This one had me on the edge of my chair the entire trip. And I was still surprised by the ending! Awesome book!

I used to love her....

I think it is time for Iris to put down her typewriter. Turn it into a nice planter or something. This book was hard to get through and was too predictable. The characters are boring and never come off the paper at all. The plot was thin..... I was really disappointed.

Best Yet

This was EXCELLENTLY done. I did not know who the serial killer was until you choose to reveal.

Poor plot and development of that plot.

Rather unreal characters plus the plot wasn't very well thought out. The characters reaction to danger was rather unbelievable.

Soppy rubbish

The worst narrator ever. Her male voices sounded like monsters from a kid’s story. Will hesitate before purchasing another story by that author and definitely will not purchase one with the same narrator.

Really quite awful.

I thought the plot itself was interesting but lord these characters. The main character is ok on her own, but so contradictory it’s hard to look beyond. She says several times she doesn’t want to be involved in the case and yet continues to go out of her way to assert herself into the case and act as if she’s the most important on the team. But the boyfriend/not boyfriend love interest. Awful. I am mind boggled that this wasn’t written by a man because Lynch is possibly the worst character I’ve read. He basically sexually harasses the main character through the entire novel. He’s childish and everything is an innuendo. The main character of course, continuing to be contradictory, either can’t take her hands off him, or hates him. The plot could have made for an interesting story, but hard pass on this take. The narration was… ok, but her iteration of male voices was difficult to listen too.

Romance cliff hanger

I enjoyed this story overall especially the surprise villain at the end. I always hate to see characters get killed off but the author made it as painless as possible. The romance is somewhat of a cliffhanger. it has been five books in the making and seems like such a waste of years for them when they could be sharing a rich life.
other than that I have really liked thisbaeries.

Unbelievable main character Kendra

She's too perfect, too great as a detective, too desirable, too unbelievable. Over the top to the point of losing my interest in the story. The narrator, though more than fair as a performer, was unable to deliver on all the male voices required. A second narrator would have helped.
