Publisher's summary

New York City's oldest medical center is the scene of a ghastly attack: top neurosurgeon Gemma Dogen is found in her office, where she has been sexually assaulted and designated by the cops as a "likely to die." By the time assistant D.A. Alexandra Cooper has plunged into the case, it's a high-profile, media-infested murder investigation. As Alex's passion to find the killer intensifies, she discovers that she is the next target for lethal violence.

"An authoritative and scary view from one who has battled evil and locked it away. Fairstein just gets better. Get to know her if you dare." (Patricia Cornwell)
"A whopping whodunit...With its taut plot and classy setting, Likely to Die is an uptown act." (People)

What?

Excellent book. Her stories are consistently good. I have very sensitive ears and don't get the complaints of sucking and swallowing sounds. Every reader I've listened to makes a few sounds, but this one certainly doesn't make enough to matter. Excellent writer. Excellent reader.

Very Entertaining

I enjoyed this murder mystery very much. Alexa the DA was professional and very astute. It was my first book by this author. I gained much insight into how much leverage DA's have. I had no idea of the amount of field work they do or are allowed to do. I will be reading more books by this author.

I had no problems with the narrator. She did a very good job. I have listened to other books by this narrator and she is a credible reader.

Likely to listen!

Where does Likely to Die rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Hmmm...in the top 20%

Who was your favorite character and why?

The rough, tough detective. He just tells it like it is and is always there to rescue Our Heroine.

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love her phrasing and ability to do different voices. It makes the story come alive. She rocks! I know that some of the reviews said that she swallows too much...gee...I didn't notice enough of this to bother me.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Witless for the prosecution (sorry...I find the main character somewhat thin...)

Good at low volume

The story was good and worth hearing and the narrator would even be fine except I can hear every swallow as a big, wet tongue crashes into the roof of her mouth, so distracting. Turn the volume down and it's definitely tolerable but since I use the headphone noise to block out noise at work it wasn't ideal for me.

Cough Drop, Anyone?

Would you listen to Likely to Die again? Why?

The story is pretty good; the detective is delightful. the only thing that might hold me back is the narrator. She does a great job doing voices, but it sounds like she is sucking on a cough drop or piece of candy. It is very distracting at times. I think it is a shame that such a good narrator spoils her work with the loud swallowing and sloppy saliva. I finished the book and look forward to reading another Fairstein book. However, I pray that the narrator stops swallowing and rolling her tongue around while talking.

What other book might you compare Likely to Die to and why?

Light mysteries such as Nina Reilly books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Very slow plot development

Would you try another book from Linda Fairstein and/or Barbara Rosenblat?

Not sure.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Have more scenes that contributed to the plot development, and a whole lot less time spent dedicated to the minutiae of her daily activities. Don't need to know in detail what she is doing every minute of her day and night.

Have you listened to any of Barbara Rosenblat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and they are comparable.

What character would you cut from Likely to Die?

None

Any additional comments?

This isn't as good as her first book, Final Jeopardy.

Way too "in your face"

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Was not prepared for so much unnecessarily graphic depictions of crime scenes and postmortem results also too specific and redundant questions of suspects and other victims who survived similar attacks.

What could Linda Fairstein have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

toned down the gory details and explicit descriptions of wounds and processes of the actual attack(s).

Would you listen to another book narrated by Barbara Rosenblat?

Yes the narration was okay

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No and it it did turn me off from others in the series.

Any additional comments?

Wish I had done more research on this author and looked more closely at other negative reviews.

Meh.

Predictable plot. The most interesting character is dead from the beginning. The narrator sounds like a pack a day smoker.

Fairstein fan..

I love this author not only was she a real life DA, but she has an incredible grasp of storytelling the real life day to day without being boring. That being said I usually look forward to Barbara Rosenblat telling the story as she does a great job, and she is the characters for me, but this book fell a little flat. However, I contribute that also to this was one of her first books with the characters. Overall, GREAT story, couldn't wait to listen everyday!

The First

This is the first but not the last of Linda Fairstein's books that I listen to. I enjoyed the story and am especially hopeful that Ms. Rosenblat is the narrator for all of them.

Also like that they are priced so reasonably.
