Publisher's Summary

Marriage can be a real killer. One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times best seller Gillian Flynn, takes that statement to its darkest place in this unpausable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work "draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction." Gone Girl's toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn't do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

What the Critics Say

"Flynn masterfully lets this tale of a marriage gone toxically wrong gradually emerge through alternating accounts by Nick and Amy, both unreliable narrators in their own ways. The reader comes to discover their layers of deceit through a process similar to that at work in the imploding relationship. Compulsively readable, creepily unforgettable, this is a must read for any fan of bad girls and good writing." (Publishers Weekly)

"Bad writing, decent story , awful ending"

The only good thing about this was the plot twists. Even those had played themselves out by halfway through. I don't get what all the fuss was about on this book. Seriously. The writing was downright high school level in some places. So melodramatically overdone, bad metaphors, telling not showing, so much point by point over analysis inside the characters heads. And what happened to the husband's internal memory narrative that he had bashed in her head in the first few chapters. Suddenly that conveniently disappeared. Plot holes. So bad .

    "Disgusting"

This book was published about four years ago and I just recently read it so I'm coming to the table late. I read the reviews and I like a good thriller/mystery so I bought the audiobook. This book is not a good thriller or mystery. I can't even imagine why it got such great reviews from so many critics and readers.

I don't think this book has anything at all to do with a marriage gone wrong. It doesn't really have anything to do with anything except toxic people, one in particular. The exceptionally toxic character has a pathology that's akin to a serial killer. One extremely sick psychopath.

There are enough real psychopaths in the world without an author sitting around making up characters that glorify this pathology for profit. The fact that so many people have embraced this book is troubling in the extreme. I've also found it troubling that so many people have written 5-star reviews that have warned the public about there being many swear words in the book. Yes . . . there are swear words, but that's nothing compared to what this book is really about. It seems our society has truly degenerated to the point that the author's characters are interesting and thrilling to many people.

Personally, I find the sick psychopath absolutely disgusting and I do not wish to have this pathology rambling around in my head.

    "Waist of my time."

It initially took me a very long to get into the book. Then when it finally had my attention around chapter 10 or so the ending sucks. Good narrator but that's about it!

    "Major disappointment!"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. I cant' tell you how much I was enjoying this page-turner of a book until I got to the end. I couldn't wait to find out how Nick might be able to turn the tables on Amy. And then, Poof. He gives up! What? You've got to be kidding me. My advice is to skip this one. It's too much of a letdown although it might be a great project in a creative writing class to rewrite the last chapter.

"This is the book that everyone flips for?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I suppose it was well done. But it's ultimately such a mean and unbelievable book. I started out greatly enthused, and in the end, felt cheated.

"worst audio book i have ever listened to."

so f-ing boring. Basically two people bitching and whining about their relationship problems. if i wanted to listen to people's relationship problems id go become a marriage counselor. How do people listen to this crap for 20 hours? i wish i can get my money back. good narrators but it's like da vinci painting with excrement, even a master can't make art out of shit.

    "Predictable "twist" and unlikeable characters"

I am almost always surprised by the twist in mystery/thriller novels. This one I had figured out in the first few chapters. From that point I just had to wait through excess backstory to get to the anticlimactic twist. And from that chapter on, the characters became more revolting by the minute. And the ending is ridiculously awful. The only redeeming quality about this audiobook was the performance. Both readers were terrific. Too bad they didn't have a better story.

"Bad people doing bad things to each other"
Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?

I would rather pour acid into my eyes, and tilt my head back and just wait for the burning to wash over my brain to erase the memory of this literary abomination.

What could Gillian Flynn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

No character is good in this story. Bad people doing bad things to each other without empathy or remorse. I only read this to try and make the movie more palatable, And I still never finished that either. I love a good roller coaster into hell, but this was aiming for the "requiem for a dream" decent- but instead it comes off as simply sociopathic and shallow with no one caring for anyone. I suppose its like watching 2 people i don't like break up. theres a little bit of schadenfreude but the value goes away when I remember that I hate these people and I don't care what they do or say to each other. It makes me remember that I was thinking about vacuuming the lawn, fix hole in socks or really anything that doesn't involve these horrid people!

What does Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    meh~

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gone Girl?

what if I could travel back in time and prevent this book from ever coming out. would that cause ripples in the time line that trickle down to other better books of the future? See? thats already a better sequel.

    Any additional comments?

Why do so many people like this tripe?
