Publisher's Summary

Murder, sunken treasure, and pirates both ancient and modern send Doc Ford on a nightmare quest in the thrilling new novel in the New York Times best-selling series.

Marine biologist Doc Ford has been known to help his friends out of jams occasionally, but he's never faced a situation like this.

His old pal Carl Fitzpatrick has been chasing sunken wrecks most of his life, but now he's run afoul of the Florida Division of Historical Resources. Its director, Leonard Nickelby, despises amateur archaeologists, which is bad enough, but now he and his young "assistant" have disappeared - along with Fitzpatrick's impounded cache of rare Spanish coins and the list of uncharted wreck sites Fitz spent decades putting together. Some of Fitz's own explorations have been a little...dicey, so he can't go to the authorities. Doc is his only hope.

But greed makes people do terrible things: rob, cheat, even kill. With stakes this high, there's no way the thieves will go quietly - and Doc's just put himself in their crosshairs.

I feel like this book was over edited.

I'm a die hard Randy fan, but this one felt a little choppy. still a fun listen though. if this is your first attempts at Randy White, do the books in order!

What went wrong?

I have read all of the Doc Ford books and enjoyed them. Unfortunately, this latest publication really disappoints. I do not know whether it is a writing issue or an editing issue, but I had a very hard time following the story and understanding which characters were speaking. There was little, if any, exciting anticipation of what the big reveal may be. And when it was exposed, it was a real yawn. Whites research on ancient shipwrecks was too prevalent in the story. Although I do like to be educated, I did not choose a historical novel. I chose a mystery.

I love almost all the other books I was disappointed. I feel like someone was making a deadline

I finished it, but...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I finished it but it was a slog. I've always looked forward to White's new books, but this one....After I finished this listening to this one, my husband listened to it in the car on a trip. I was doing other things, but listened to it again. It was like I'd never heard it before. It was no better the second time around. BTW, the trip ended before my husband could finish the book. He wasn't interested in finishing it on my IPOD. Disappointing.

Always enjoy hearing another Doc Ford adventure

I always enjoy hearing another Doc Ford adventure, the only downside is waiting for the next installment. Randy Wayne White has an incredible mind to keep dreaming up new adventures for Doc and company. George Guidall as always gives a stellar performance bringing it all to life.

Downsizing our entertainment

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A more reasonably sized novel. Say 14 hr for its audiobook?

What was most disappointing about Randy Wayne White’s story?

Too short and too much psycho-drivel.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

George Guidall did the best he could to present the undisciplined wandering.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Great disappointment with what Doc Ford novels have become.

Any additional comments?

Just because James Patterson thinks he can get away with charging full price for half a novel, RWW should treat his readers similarly.
