Publisher's summary

James Henry, a kind-hearted professor of English literature, is forced to move back home to Quincy's Gap, a tiny town in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, to care for his aging father. Shortly after moving into a house that hasn't changed since his childhood, the overweight, divorced, book-loving cheese puff addict accepts a position as head librarian and joins a supper club for dieters who call themselves the "Flab Five".

Avoiding carbs is almost impossible in this deep-fried, all-you-can-eat Southern town, so the mysterious death of a young and healthy athlete provides the perfect distraction. While trying to cut carbs and avoid temptations, James and his fellow supper club members work together to shed pounds and track down a killer.

Nice read

This is an interesting story. The narration is a little off. However the story is decent with a nice plot.

Identified w/the Premise

Dealing with weight loss for over 60 years, I understood the struggles of the characters.

Nice little group

Appreciate the Flab Five and the premise of coming together to diet. Interesting how each character has a skill or connection which advances the plot. Interesting story and start of series.

Another great series by Ellery Adams.

So glad that the Supper Club series is now being made available in audio. This is a great series and those of us who can no longer read printed books (or even have trouble with EBooks) are fortunate to now have it available.

This is a very real group of people. They are people with their own personal issues who help each other stick to a difficult goal. They are not always successful, but they don't point fingers and shame someone for slipping from their goal. They instead encourage them to keep going. Their struggle is something that many of us can relate to.

The mystery was entertaining and I didn't suspect the murderer until just before the "reveal". Overall it is a great book and I can't wait for others in the series to become available in audio.

The Flab Five vs Very Vain

I'm a big fan of Ellery Adams cozy mystery series . . . at first I wasn't sure the Supper Club Mysteries would measure up to some of my other favorites, but about half way through, it caught fire for me . . . still not up quite there with The Book Retreat Mysteries, Antiques and Collectibles Mysteries or The Hope Street Church Mysteries . . . but I've got to give it to the author, she has a wonderful imagination, a great sense of humor and can always keep me guessing . . . Just like in all her books, the folks in Quincy's Gap, Virginia are growing on me, especially James, the middle aged Professor, now librarian, come home to live with and care for his crotchety father following the death of his mother . . . the rest of the Flab Five, each one food junkies, just like the Professor, have their own quirks . . . and reasons to want to lose weight . . . not the least of which is the constant ridicule and total disregard by people like Brinkley Myers, a former high school jock in the town . . . When Brinkley turns up dead a couple days later, the Flab Five vow to track down the killer . . . from there its a wild ride on the diet roller coaster, from house to house, sneaked snacks all along the way, with a climax that I certainly didn't expect! BRAVO!!! I'm ready for Book Two!!!

Crabs and cadavers by Ellery ADAMS

The story was good but she writes all her characters like the are in their sixty. When they are in thirties.

needs some warning

once the mystery starts it's much like her other books. you have to get pass all the talk about how "fat" they are and how much they put themselves down. the main character is 50 lb over weight at 6' tall but the way he is depicted sound like he is 150lb over. the way others talk about and to the main characters is horrible and disheartening like his dad. also, all the comments about how bad their lives are because they're 35 and fat. the first 5 chapters are the worst for this. also that he gives up his whole life and happiness to go take care of his dad who is so mean to him. I hope her other books are better and this is a one off.
