Publisher's summary

In this powerful K-9 crime thriller, FBI Special Agent Meg Jennings and her trusted search-and-rescue Labrador, Hawk, must race against the clock before a diabolical killer strikes again.

Somewhere in the Washington, DC, area, a woman lies helpless in a box. Beneath the earth. Barely breathing. Buried alive. In Quantico, the FBI receives a coded message from the woman's abductor. He wants to play a game with them: decipher the clues, find the grave, save the girl. The FBI's top cryptanalysts crack the code, and Special Agent Meg Jennings and her K-9 partner, Hawk, scramble to the scene of the crime. Cryptic clues lead them astray, and by the time they solve the puzzle, it's too late.

But the killer's game is far from over. Soon another message arrives. Another victim is taken, and the deadly pattern is repeated - again and again. Each kidnapping triggers another desperate race against time, each with the possibility of another senseless death. That's when Meg decides to try something drastic. Break the Bureau's protocol. Bring in her brilliant sister, Cara, a genius at word games, to decipher the kidnapper's twisted clues. Meg knows she's risking her career to do it, but she's determined not to let one more person die under her and Hawk's watch. If the plan fails, it could bite them in the end.

And if it leads to the killer, it could bury them forever.

Wish I could give it 6 stars

First, I love working dogs and their handlers and the team that they form. Hawk and Meg make a wonderful team. Next, I love the family interaction, and bringing back characters from the first book.

The amount of research that was done for ‘Before It’s Too Late’ is remarkable and it makes the book real. I am finding it hard to say much more because I don’t want to give anything away. You need to give it a listen. Angela Dawe does a fabulous job as she always does.

Another Great K-9 Mystery

Sara Driscoll has written another page-turning mystery involving FBI Search and Rescue Megan Jennings and her dog, Hawk. I read the novel a year or so ago , and was blown away by the intricate plot, and the in depth characterization of both heroes and villains. I thought nothing could improve this masterful story. Then I heard Angela Dawe's audio performance. I was so wrong! Angela's use of voice for the different characters, her tone that changes from calm to excited depending on the scene, even the speed she when she reads Sara's words a loud , brings this book alive! It's like sitting in a theater with a full cast performing on stage, but there is only one actress - Angela- and the set is all in my mind! Wow! I love the books and I am loving the audio version as well . I highly recommend this audible selection !

Ugh: Serial killer of women is nightmare material

Although I like concept of canine handlers and the main characters, the plot in this second book being the torture and murder of several women who simply resemble the main character is just too stressful. No thanks! I listen to audiobooks for entertainment, edification, and relaxation. That’s why I’m returning this title after the first murder. I just don’t want to imbibe nightmare material. It’s too similar to the JD Robb In Death series that was way to stressful. No thanks. I prefer taking my literary mental vacation in a lighter and more enjoyable fictional world.

good k9 procedural

The story is twisty, as all these books are, but the dogs - especially Hawk - are superb!

One can sit back and listen and know almost immediately who is speaking - the voices are perfect.

Too . . . Too

Good performance but the story was predictable and in-real. If I was your boss and you failed to provide information on an ongoing case, not only would I have fired you, I would have had you arrested.

Setting in DC and Arlington

I just visited DC and Arlington, Virginia so I could picture all the places in the book. That brought the book alive to me.
It took me a long time to get into the book but I finished it.
I guess I liked the characters, humans and doggies enough that I'm going to read the first book in the series (I started with book 2) then move on from their.
I believe 9 books in all.
Judge for yourself. You may love it from the start.
