Publisher's Summary

Eager to escape London following the scandal of her husband's death, Lady Fieldhurst accepts an invitation to spend the summer in rural Yorkshire as the guest of Sir Gerald and Lady Hollingshead. She soon discovers, however, that country life is not the panacea she had hoped for. Tension reigns and tempers flare at Hollingshead Place, due in large part to Lady Hollingshead's ambitions for her daughter, a lovely young lady destined for a brilliant marriage in spite of her love for a penniless curate. When a dinner party ends with the death of the vicar - a kindly old soul whose only sin appears to be the authorship of a dull local history - Lady Fieldhurst suspects foul play and sends for Bow Street Runner John Pickett, with one stipulation: since she is a guest in the house, Picket must keep his connection to Bow Street a secret. Pickett obliges by presenting himself as her footman, complete with livery and powdered hair. But Pickett soon has his white-gloved hands full sifting through old secrets, uncovering hidden passions, and dealing with a demanding housekeeper - not to mention avoiding the younger daughter of the house, a precocious 14-year-old with a school girl infatuation for the faux footman. Then there is the problem of Lady Fieldhurst herself, at once an able assistant and an all too pleasant distraction.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Dead Bore?

This is a cozy little mystery that keep my interest from beginning to end. The almost romance between Lady Fieldhearst and John Pickett is charming .

    "Delightful read"

What can go wrong with a story with such a pun in the title? Nothing, I tell you!

It's a delightful mystery. And I'm not saying this because I've heard the previous two John Pickett mysteries and by now am a fan. This story is a sort of Agatha Christie big-house Poirot mystery set in Regency England. There's a satisfying slow-burn romance on top of that...and an interesting prophecy... (done from Tarot cards, which always pleases me, since I've some skill in that) The two main characters felt like my old friends since the previous novel, and now I'm the faithful companion on their fun journey full of dead bores :)

I can't stress enough how nice it is to listen to Joel Froomkin narrating, but then - don't trust me, I'm a fan! Go give him a listen and find out for yourself :)

My heartfelt thanks to the author, narrator, or publisher for providing me this audiobook via Audiobook Boom at no cost in exchange for my unbiased review.

    "Another great book"

Once again, Ms. South has written a magnificent blend of regency England and mystery. To this lover of both genres, I can't think of a more perfect union.

The characters are interesting, the mystery not easily solved, and the hint of romance between two people of different backgrounds and social standing, make for an engaging read.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and unbiased review.

"Fun "cosy" with a great narrator"

An intriguing story with a variety of interesting characters all well read by Joel Froomkin. I always knew who was talking, and the female characters were especially great. This was a really fun listen.

"Fun, feel good mystery set in old England"

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. A fun, feel good mystery with some restrained romance. Being a huge Downton Abbey fan, this story reminded me a bit of that, with the upstairs downstairs vibe- but with some Sherlock Holmes added in. The main characters are very likable, and I'm a huge sucker for the Agatha Christie-esque the murderer is someone in this very room feeling.
It's part of a short John Picket mystery series, and I am going to continue.
As a disclaimer, I didn't read the first one, but I didn't feel lost, as any missed information was filled in in the story.
And I have to say-- the narrator was FANTASTIC! Joel Froomkin made me forget as he voiced the female roles that it was actually a man reading the book! That's not easy to do. I would listen to more books by this narrator as well!
Listen (or read) for a fun easy feel good read.

    "Excellent read."

I am hooked on these excellent mysteries. I can only hope that Audible continues with the rest of Ms. South's John Pickett series and with the same narrator, who did as good a narration as any narrator I have heard in my 100+ Audible books.

"Another John Pickett Fan is Added"
Would you listen to A Dead Bore again? Why?

Absolutely! Wonderful writing, delightful narration = a second, third or fourth listen

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Dead Bore?

So many. I really enjoyed the witty writings of Ms. Cobb South. Her characters are rich and the detailed descriptions of scenes along with the performance of Mr. Froomkin makes this a fantastic listen. It was like a John Pickett comes to Downton Abbey.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and No. So many witty characters and scenes, I didn't want to pause the storytelling. But I was also delighted to unpause as soon as possible.

    Any additional comments?

Narrator, Mr. Froomkin's performance was such a delight. He is a wonderful storyteller. Mr. Froomkin is articulate, his grasp for the various characters was on par 110%. Loved his performance of both male and female voices. I must also note, that I would be extremely disappointed if the John Pickett series was narrated by anyone else. He has spoiled me! Now, to purchase the first John Pickett audiobook.

I received a free copy via audiobook boom in exchange for an unbiased review.

"Great listen -- title does not match enjoyment"

This is the first book by this author or narrator that I have listened to. I think both are very talented. The narrator did a great job with the accents. I liked the imagery that was conveyed in the story. This is a clean historical mystery. It is part of a series and yet a stand alone book. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher, and/or narrator.

    "A great book! Would recommend!"
Would you listen to A Dead Bore again? Why?

I would defiantly listen to Dead Bore again! I found John Pickett, who I love a lot, to be funny and interesting. I couldn't find anything really wrong with this book and that's saying something because I usually find something that puts my off a book. But not in this case which I must admit surprised me. I think this is to do with the main characters, who are completely different from each other, that kept me hooked to the book. I would defiantly be reading/listening to the next one in this series.

I have not read/listened to the first book in this series, so you can read it without reading book one since there is no cliff hanger, however I got the impression that the relationship between the two characters will progress a bit more during the series.

I would recommend this book to anyone who love historical fiction, mystery, a little romance with funny moments.

Who was your favorite character and why?

John Pickett the bow street runner who investigated the murder has to be my favorite character. I have not come across a character like his and I loved him! I also found him to be funny even though he is trying not to be. The are moments that made me smile and other moments where I laughed out loud.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I would give the narrator 3 1/2 stars. At the beginning I found it a bit confusing on who was saying what based on the voice impressions the narrator was doing. If there was a dialogue between two/three characters then it was perfect you can distinguish between the characters. They felt realistic enough that you get sucked into the book. This especially happened in moments between John and Lady Fieldhurst.
