Publisher's Summary
When Tess Tremaine starts a new life in the colorful town of Goose Pimple Junction, curiosity leads her to look into a 75-year-old murder. Suddenly she's learning the foreign language of Southern speak, resisting her attraction to local celebrity Jackson Wright, and dealing with more mayhem than she can handle.
A bank robbery, murder, and family tragedy from the 1930s are pieces of the mystery that Tess attempts to solve. As she gets close to the truth, she encounters danger, mystery, a lot of southern charm, and a new temptation for which she's not sure she's ready.

A satisfying fun read
In Murder and Mayhem in Goosepimple Junction by Amy Metz, Tess Tremaine moves to the small Southern town of Goosepimple Junction to start life anew after a painful divorce, where she meets some unique friends in this cozy little community. Tess meets new friends in the cafe, in particular Jackson Wright, the famous author who makes his home in Goosepimple Junction and is eager to date Tess. But after her divorce due to a cheating husband, Tess is very reluctant to start a new relationship, especially after hearing rumors that he cheated on his first wife. Getting a job at the local bookstore, Tess is intrigued to learn that the owner grew up in the house on Walnut St. So when she finds an old key in the house, it seems only natural to ask her new boss about it, leaving the woman pale and shaken. Then, that evening when she gets home, Tess discovers that someone has broken into her house and completely ransacked it. When someone breaks into the house during the middle of the next night, Tess really feels insecure, especially since the sheriff doesn’t take her case seriously. So she and Jack go on an investigation that takes them to a bank robbery in 1932.
This book has an interesting format. Each chapter begins with a definition of a Southern term, giving an example of its usage and using that term in the chapter that follows. Then, the chapter goes back to the past, beginning in 1932 in chapter one, gradually recounting the events of the bank robbery and subsequent murder that figure into the main part of the book before it turns to the present day events. The developing relationship between Tess and Jack grows with strength, though I felt they spent too much time kissing passionately, which gets tedious and not really suited to a cozy mystery.
Karen Commins narrates this book very ably, giving great expression to the story without overly emoting. She handles the accents, of a range between strong Southern and light Virginian Southern. Commins has a gentle voice that gives just the right energy to this book, especially with all the deep Southern terms specific to Goosepimple Junction.
I enjoyed the experience of listening to Murder and Mayhem in Goosepimple Junction. It was cleverly written, and the format of the book came across cleverly. I did sometimes get confused by the names, but usually things worked out ok for me to follow. I give this book four stars.

I just don't like the characters
I picked up this book because of all the positive reviews and I love myself a good cozy mystery with some history. However, these characters are just unlikable. from the "I am not a homo-sapien" to the representation that everyone in the south is just stupid and ignorant I kept on cringing while I listened to this book. If you are looking for a stereotypical representation that everyone in the south is ignorant, stupid, and a caricature this is the book for you. I just couldn't stomach it.
Even the main characters are unlikable. the male lead is only likable if you are some weak female that likes a bad representation of womanizer. Run girl, run! Those pick up lines as well as pushiness only means you are going to be a conquest, unless you are from the south and I guess it is the only type of guy you can get?
I must say that I like the reader, however I will not be buying any more from this series.

Ok, a bit quirky, but not especially exciting.
A bit of a departure from my usual reading fare and one undertaken to plug a gap in a reading challenge over on Goodreads. I needed a book authored by an Amy and this one was accessible on Audible with a download code.
It's a cosy mystery firmly set in the deep south and Goose Pimple Junction, Tennessee. Tess Tremaine relocates to the small town, after her recent divorce and soon acquires some unwanted attention of the romantic type from the local celebrity author and more worryingly a stalker type threat which escalates.... from poison notes, to a broken window, to a mugging and purse snatch and much worse before the end of the book. Why is someone hassling Tess?
The answer lies in an old town mystery of murder and robbery, of history and secrets with reputations at risk if events of the past get re-examined and resolved. As Tess digs into the town's skeletons, the narrative flip flops between the thirties and present day.
I think I struggled with the rationale that the sins of a long dead predecessor would adversely affect people's opinions and attitudes in the present day. Maybe I don't quite vibe some small town mentalities.
It wasn't the worst book I've ever encountered. Tess, herself is likable, as is her suitor, Jackson. They work closely together to solve the mystery while becoming ever closer romantically. There is a profusion of small town eccentrics and southern sayings and its a bit quirky.
I wasn't ever thrilled or excited by the book, but I was interested enough in seeing who did what and why, even though I wasn't overly convinced by their motives.
An okay listen, but not a series I'd consider continuing.
