Publisher's summary

Eli Frieden lives in the most perfect town in the world: Serenity, New Mexico. In this idyllic place, every lawn is perfectly manicured, and everyone has a pool and a tree house. Honesty and integrity are valued above all else. The 30 kids who live there never lie--they know it's a short leap from that to the awful problems of other, less fortunate places.

Eli has never left Serenity. Why would he ever want to? Then one day he bikes to the edge of the city limits, and something so crazy and unexpected happens, it changes everything. Eli convinces his friends to help him investigate further, and soon it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems in Serenity. The clues mount to reveal a shocking discovery, connecting their ideal, crime-free community to some of the greatest criminal masterminds ever known. The kids realize they can trust no one--least of all their own parents....

This is the first book in a thrilling new series from best-selling (noncriminal) mastermind Gordon Korman.

Good book, terrible ending.

I can't belive that's how it ends. That's one way to sell more books. Of course I will have to buy the next one, or should I say the rest of the story.

Quirky, Fun, and Imaginative!

When one boy becomes violently ill trying to see what's outside of his small town and another is rushed off to an unknown location questions start brewing about the peaceful town the boys live in. Friendships are formed and harrowing searches ensue while 5 special kids search for reasons their little town is not the idyllic safe haven touted by the adults. When several secrets are discovered and feelings of betrayal lead our 5 heroes to concoct an escape life becomes even more shocking. A fantastic listen with many nail bitting moments, psychological questions, and a few good giggles this is likely to become your go-to listen when you're on trips with teens! I highly recommend this book.

8th grade Middle School

Amazing! We are reading this in my Language Arts class and the kids are loving it. It is part one of a 3 part series and they are alreadylooking forward to the 2nd book (Criminal Destiny).

The different character perspectives are awesome and interesting. MasterMinds has everything: Malik...the resident "bad" guy, Amber...the "perfect" daughter., Tori...the "free" thinker., and Eli..."the "rational" one.

This book leaves you guessing what will happen next. The underlying paradox of the town, Serenity, is fascinating. There are SO many ways to teach this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially to middle school!
