Publisher's summary

Activist, documentary filmmaker, and founder of the nonprofit Lunch on Me, LaRayia Gaston offers inspiring and practical guidance for bringing kindness, generosity, and love to a world in need.

If the world’s problems feel overwhelming and making a difference seems impossible, you’re not alone. So many of us wish we could be doing something good and purposeful, but we get stuck. We think that what we do won’t matter, or that we’ll do it wrong, or that we don’t have enough time or resources to begin with. But caring about each other is a natural instinct all humans have - what is it doing to our minds, bodies, and souls to ignore this part of our humanity?

In Love Without Reason: The Lost Art of Giving a F*ck, Gaston shares an inspiring and actionable guide to help us connect with our hearts, reawaken our innate desire to make a difference, and then make that difference in a way that not only helps others, but also nourishes our own joy. Through Gaston’s inspiring stories and practical guidance, you will:

  • Dismantle the blocks that stop you from reaching out to your fellow humans - both personal fears and societal obstacles
  • Learn how to help in a good way - a way that’s needed, matches your gifts, and feels uplifting for you and those you serve
  • Create positive energy exchanges - the energy behind how we give is as important as what we give
  • Identify the places you can bring more kindness and caring into the world - to your community, your loved ones, and yourself
  • Reconnect with your natural instincts for empathy and service - and experience the joy that arises when you do
  • Explore a list of dozens of micro-gestures - simple, intentional acts of caring for another person that can be done by anyone, anywhere, at any time

Filled with profound heartwork exercises, journaling prompts, and real-world practices, Love Without Reason helps you discover that showing you care - showing you actually give a f--k - doesn’t have to be difficult and isn’t about sacrifice. It’s about joy, and it’s about love.

Critic reviews

“From the moment I met LaRayia, I knew she had a book in her. You could see it in her eyes and in her life. In a world where it can be easy to become complacent, LaRayia shows us how to find our passion again - not just for ourselves, but for others as well. She clearly shows us the power that unconditional love has to change our hearts and the lives of those around us. The radical love you will learn to tap into in this book is not the vapid ‘love’ so flippantly used today, but a deep, authentic love. This book is a beautiful manual of how to live from that love above all else. A revolutionary manifesto to Love Without Reason.” (Dr. Will Cole, leading functional medicine expert and best-selling author of The Inflammation Spectrum and Ketotarian)

“In these fragmenting times, LaRayia Gaston offers inspiring, tangible awakening tools to get engaged, lean into to giving a f--k, and activate micro-gestures of empowered service. Love Without Reason is an impassioned call to rise together, transform food scarcity, and nourish our soul’s call to be part of the circle of exchange.” (Shiva Rea, author of Tending the Heart Fire and founder of Global School for Living Yoga)

Love Without Reason is an invaluable guidebook to expanding the way we understand love and actualizing the universal good that comes from giving it freely.” (Ash Beckham, author of Step Up)

Practical Micro Gestures of Love

I’ve been curious for the last 5 years of what is the response of love to all the wildflowers under our freeways and on the street in the Bay Area. The practicum of micro gestures has opened and lighted the way!
Thank you.

LOVE WITHOUT REASON: Incredibly & insanely inspiring

I’m so grateful to have listened to Gaston’s narrative about the importance of cultivating what Gary Zukav would describe as unconditional compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, love and reverence for all life starting with ourselves. Last year I read Shannon Kaiser’s THE SELF LOVE EXPERIMENT, as well as JOY SEEKER. I also spent time with Meggan Watterson and Lodro Rinzler’s book HOW TO LOVE YOURSELF (AND SOMETIMES OTHER PEOPLE). And it’s very safe to say that Gaston’s work here is a natural extension of those works which were life altering for myself. I could go on for hours about the many things I got out of this work, but I think the most important take away was how Gaston emphasized the importance of turning words like love, compassion, and especially gratitude into action words. If you were grateful today, what did you do to make that an experience that benefits others (the only other person I’ve experienced in the last year in doing that was Andy Grant in his Udemy course on gratitude)? Expressing love and gratitude doesn’t have to be costly, it can be as simple as noticing someone else, listening to them empathically and responding with unconditional reverence. I think we forget that sometimes. This book helps us to remember it. And that’s why for me it’s worth reading - in fact I’ve already bought a copy to give to a friend tomorrow when I see her. Maybe that’s my first micro gesture I’ve done after reading this, although I’ve also been tipping at a higher amount than usual. One waiter said she thought I made a mistake when she saw I had tipped 50% on a $60 cheque, but I hadn’t. It made her day. I’m also gonna start keeping granola bars and bottled water in my car to give out to souls I pass almost daily in medians hoping for change. I’ve done this before but it’s usually with something I just got at a drive thru - like, I’ve purchased tea or coffees for work or classmates and I give my own drink to them knowing I can get something again or make it at my destination. Little things. And there’s so many more I can do. I want to volunteer again - it was a huge part of my youth, I even won a volunteer of the year nomination out of it. But I always did it for others, and because I enjoyed it. And Gaston reminded me of this in LOVE WITHOUT REASON. Unconditional love. Be love, give love. For all life, human and nonhuman, for the planet and our corner in the universe.

Love!

You embody the discipline of Love so beautifully. Loving with your whole heart can be difficult in a world where resistance and not giving a f*ck has been normalized. Thank you for choosing to walk and operate from your heart space the way that you do. This book will be a catalyst of change for many. The medicine that’s needed to shift the world into higher timelines of unconditional love.

Beautiful and Inspirational

Woven throughout are inspirational suggestions that we can use to add something positive for individuals, communities, and the world. Just like a pebble being dropped into a still pond. If everyone followed through, then there would be a transformative tsunami of love. Each of us can do something.
