Publisher's summary

This book vividly brings to life 50 years of leadership and life lessons, told in a compelling and sometimes very personal way.

A master storyteller, Whelden does this in 24 easily digestible chapters, starting with "character," the basic building block for all great leaders. From there, he addresses the importance of trust, four different methods of mentoring, delivering under pressure, setting organizational expectations, breaking down cultural barriers, effective communications, leaving a legacy, risk management, and many more topics that have everyday application for all of us.

Widely acclaimed by dozens of corporate leaders and senior military leaders, Whelden has the unique ability to connect to listeners through storytelling and takeaways that anyone can then apply: in the corporate world, the non-profit community, or simply in their everyday life. Two bonus appendixes are included that are tools he personally used as a senior leader in the military: his "Philosophy of Command" - time tested over 30 years - and a self-reflection on himself as a leader titled "Whelden on Whelden." You will not be disappointed!

If you’re a leader or an inspiring leader, READ THIS BOOK!!!

When a person has a 40+ years of documented leadership success and they write a book, you read it! Loved that it was not a “How to book”, but a book that gave applicable stories so the reader can truly understand how to apply each lesson. I found myself “comparing notes” as MG Whelden took me on a journey into my past with relatable topics and references that many around the world would understand. This book is a “rock” that I’ll put in my rucksack and carry for the rest of my days. Whether you're a military leader, corporate leader, or a leader of your household, Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best is a MUST READ!!

Lead like a General!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The author recounts various stories from his time in the military as a Major General accompanied by lessons in leadership that all manner of leaders can use. There's something here for leaders in business, church, the military, and even little league coaches or Boy Scout leaders. If you're not driving while you're listening, I highly suggest taking notes; this is a great book. Good choice of narrator, as it isn't monotone reading. Highly recommended for today's and tomorrow's leaders.

Awesome Book!

Great book for leaders in all industries. Professional and personal vignettes throughout. Have already used one of the questions during an interview that Mr Whelden eludes to when hew was interviewed for his last job. Outstanding!

As Entertaining as Inspring

The lessons in this book are easily understood, not because they are simple but because of the way the author teaches them through story telling. I will pass this book onto my children. A+ narrator!

A unique and interesting perspective on leadership

Great advice for leaders. I think a few of my previous supervisors could learn a lot from the general. I sure did. I like that the book is mostly story-based in how he shares his principles of leadership. The narrator has a nice voice too.

Specific and useful tools and methods by an expert

It was very informative and interesting to listen to General Wlelden's perspectives on leadership. It was very interesting to see inside his General level perspective as he painted each concept with a compelling story to drive it home. While it was a bit distracting to hear him list the name and rank of the characters in these stories, it was awesome to see how much respect he has for the Marines.
Q: "How long does it take an average person's to become a marine?"
A: "An average person will NEVER become a marine!" is a quote I will be using for years.
Thank you, thank you!
