Publisher's Summary

From celebrated New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice comes a riveting story of a seaside community shaken by a violent crime and a tragic loss.

Years ago, Beth Lathrop and her sister Kate suffered what they thought would be the worst tragedy of their lives the night both the famous painting Moonlight and their mother were taken. The detective assigned to the case, Conor Reid, swore to protect the sisters from then on.

Beth moved on, throwing herself fully into the art world, running the family gallery, and raising a beautiful daughter with her husband Pete. Kate, instead, retreated into herself and took to the skies as a pilot, always on the run. When Beth is found strangled in her home, and Moonlight goes missing again, Detective Reid can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu.

Reid immediately suspects Beth’s husband, whose affair is a poorly kept secret. He has an airtight alibi - but he also has a motive, and the evidence seems to point to him. Kate and Reid, along with the sisters’ closest childhood friends, struggle to make sense of Beth’s death, but they only find more questions: Who else would have wanted Beth dead? What’s the significance of Moonlight?

Twenty years ago, Reid vowed to protect Beth and Kate - and he’s failed. Now solving the case is turning into an obsession....

Overblown and Overwrought

Not to mention endless exposition. If I had wanted to read a novel about dealing with grief and the unhappy memories that feed it, I would have chosen that sort of book. The constant angst of all the characters, and I do mean all, didn't do much to advance the story line because it consumed most of the novel. About two thirds through the book I had to skip ahead when this went on and on and on. Turned out the outcome wasn't worth it. I should have just stopped listening.

Loved it!

Kept me guessing to the end. I loved the depth of emotion and detail the author used to bring me into this heartbreaking and bittersweet story. From each of the characters, the art work and even the setting. I didn’t want the story to end!

More of a drama fiction

This book is a drama fiction that happen around a murder case. I like the narrator but not quite like the way the author told the story. I might give 1 more star if the story shorten to 10 hours.

Take a ride on Luanne Rice's mystery machine.

Hang on as the new England coast serves as the back drop for the monied and penniless characters. And the ending is .......

Enjoyed it... but predictable

Entertaining, good character development, dark without being completely depressing. However, I correctly predicted the ending less than halfway through. It sometimes felt like author was trying too hard to steer me, and nothing was very subtle. The narration is amazing, but maybe TOO good.. it might have been more mysterious if read versus heard. I also think the motive was a stretch, but I guess maybe not if you’re a sociopath, but that’s never really expressed, maybe just implied. However, I would still recommend

Great twist to a murder mystery

Enjoyed the story. Good characters. Just wish there weren’t so much use of the F word. A couple of fairly graphic descriptions of the crime. Would definitely be rated “R” if it were a movie.
