Publisher's Summary

From the bestselling author of Cold Waters comes a brooding thriller about a woman who must decide if safeguarding her family is worth burying a truth that will haunt her forever.

Thirteen years ago, Jori Trahan’s boyfriend vanished without a trace. Now, after moving back home to Alabama to care for her ailing grandmother and autistic brother, she comes face-to-face with the deadly mystery behind his disappearance.

Jori has a rare form of synesthesia, meaning she can “hear” colors; to her, tones of voice are as unique as fingerprints. With the help of this ability and a sympathetic cop, Jori comes dangerously close to uncovering the truth. But those responsible will go to any length - including murder - to keep their dark secrets buried.

Soon, it seems that no one in the sleepy bayou town is safe, and after Jori’s brother is kidnapped, she knows she must drop the investigation or risk losing her family. But when protecting them means letting an evil deed go unpunished, putting family first may be the last thing she’ll ever do.

Interesting Story

I enjoyed this narration, they all did a great job!
This book was a mystery, but was also a book that made you consider the truth about your family of origin. The saying “We can pick our friends but not our family” came to mind when reading this book. There were plenty of skeletons in their closets! They were raised hard and hide their secrets well. I figured out some of the culprits early on, but not all! Worth the read!

Terrible!!!!

I can only say I'm glad it over. It was so boring. And Jori was like a teenager still obsessed with the boy who disappeared when she WAS a teenager, 13 years ago. Then she became obsessed with her cousins murder years before. All this was told in the first person. Then there was Tegan, the deputy, who was trying to solve a murder, that happened more recently. That was also in the first person. Then the killer's narrative was in the first person, too. I guess that 4th narrator was the voice of the boy who disappeared, before he disappeared.

There was no romance, because there was no hero. And the F-bomb was used 4 times.
As for the narration: The females were terrible because they read without emotions. The men read that same way. So, none of them were any good.

It was ok

Fine for some background listening. The killer was pretty obvious early on, and the end dragged.

Couldn't finish.

Way to much of nothing. I tried jumping ahead to get through it and it still didn't have much plot.
I'm glad it was a freebie with kindle unlimited.

Very good narration

The narrators saved this novel from being a dislike for me. The mystery was pretty much obvious from the beginning. The smooth, southern cadence of the narrator for Jori was very good. I enjoyed her voice acting the most. I will search her out in the future.

Predictable but with Good Character Development

I considered returning this book almost immediately but wanted to give it a chance because the foreshadowing of the mystery was intriguing. I “purchased” the Kindle (for free) as an Amazon first pick book, so my Audible copy of this was only $1.99.

Some of the situations were a little unbelievable but it’s fiction, therefore I’m not very strict. The character development was good and I kept listening because two of the female characters were quite likable. I found myself wishing for their success and interested to hear what else would be revealed about them.

Anyone who has listened to/read mystery books for some time will be able to predict who the bad guy will turn out to be but I don’t feel it takes away from the excitement. There are things I didn’t exactly expect, but I also was not completely shocked upon the revealing. The author did a great job of wrapping everything up and explaining some details that put the whole thing together for me. And, one last detail in the final few minutes that explained why the main character was so wrapped up in a teenage romance thirteen years earlier. There was more to this story and the characters’ individual motivations than seemed apparent for a large part of the book. It was definitely worth it to keep listening. I’ve already added one of this author’s other books to my wish list!

Will Be Reading This Author Again!

I thoroughly enjoyed getting this introduction to a 'new-to-me' writer. The characters were well developed and real. I appreciated the sensitivity shown to folks with autism. I didn't agree with some of the choices the characters made, but they were realistic and thought provoking. I'm confident I will enjoy other works.

A truly gripping tale!

There was just something that sucked me into this story and never let go until the end.
Jori’s boyfriend, and love of her life, literally disappeared on prom night. Deacon and his family disappeared and were never seen/heard from again. 13yrs later, Jori is back in the Bayou to care for her aging grandmother and autistic brother. Retuning home stirs up memories best left forgotten...but when a recently released murderer is killed the night that Jori confronts him, the past returns with a vengeance. The journey towards truth may cost Jori much more than she already has. This gripping story of greed, lies and betrayal will leave you speechless. The ending will gut you. Great story by this new-to-me author. Fantastic performance by the narration team.
