Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

Excellent Learning Program

I will have to say that I was very skeptical about this program at first, but Pimsleur has definitely converted me! By unit 17 of phase 2, I was able to converse with a couple from Germany. Mind you, I do not have a
FULL vocabulary, but the couple said that my pronunciation was like that of a native speaker. Granted, I do spend more time than the program recommends per day and have had to repeat some units, but to be able to be understood by a non-English speaker after only roughly six months TOTAL (including this program and others) is impressive. Of these programs, I have used the Pimsleur program for about four of these months. I can speak better German than I can Spanish, of which I had four years of formal study.

Introduction to the German Language

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This audiobook works great as a family foreign language project. We listen to it for a half hour a day.

It is realistic and simple and goes back to lesson 1.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

He sounds like he is German and is pretty clear.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. We just did it a little at a time.

Worth the money

In five lessons I have certainly learned more than I would learn in several lectures in college for a fraction of the cost.

Quick way to learn basic spoken German

I did have three years of German in college but promptly forgot it upon graduation. With the Pimsleur German phase1 I was able to feel comfortable speaking and understanding basic spoken German again. The program starts with a few basics and builds on them with each subsequent chapter.
I was impressed enough to buy the next two units (06-10, 11-15)

Good way to learn spoken German

This program really helped me. It won't teach you written German but is an excellent way to learn how to speak the language.

Great for learning German on the go.

I'm going to be traveling to Germany next year and want to learn as much German as I can before I go. I already have a long commute, so these tapes seemed like a great solution for me. Now that I've finished this first set, I'm definitely going to be purchasing the rest of these lessons. They were easy to follow, and I feel like I'm actually starting to learn valuable communication skills rather than just spitting back vocabulary words. It's too early to tell just how much I'll learn, but I liked my experience enough to keep going.

Not that great.

This program provides a few phrases and examples to commit to memory. If you want to memorize a few odd words and one or two phrases, this will do fine. There is no explanation of what you are saying, sentence, structure, ect. If you genuinely want ro learn the German language, so as to speak it on your own and not regurgitate cookie cutter sentences I would suggest another course.

Easy to Use

I found Pimsleur's German Phase 1 very easy to use and understand. The format is excellent. It eases you into the language and through continuous repetition plants the language in your long term memory. The repetitiveness is by no means tedious and the course constantly challenges you to think for yourself by forming sentences from the vocabulary you have learned. It does not overload you either with information but instead gradually introduces additional vocabulary. The tutor goes back on previous units as a refresher every so often which ensures that earlier lessons are not forgotten. I would recommend this method of language learning and look forward to starting lessons 6-10.

An up to date method in learning any language.

This system of learning a language is very successful. It really works. Just do as the guide to lessons tells you and you will succeed in learning a new language. I did German at school, I am half German and only used German at summer times as a kid when we would visit Grandma (Omi) in Germany. I could understand and converse a lot less then. Now, due to the Pimsleur method of learning I have a confidence in really understanding and holding a conversation in German. Very, very highly recommended for all that wish to learn any language in the series of languages.

Really good way to learn German

The constant repetition of the phrases makes them really stick in your head and by the time you've worked through 5 units you've picked up enough useful phrases to have a reasonable conversation.

Good introduction

I liked Paul Nobles approach to teaching but it didn’t have a follow up program. I tried Michel Thomas but wasn’t impressed. Pimsleur seems to have a good balance introducing new vocabulary and reinforcing the old vocabulary. The only downside I can see so far is that it is American but the German speakers are native. Would recommend.

No book or text to follow

What did you like best about German Level 1 Lessons 1-5? What did you like least?

The approach is good, but without seeing the words in print, it is very difficult to understand what is being said.

Do you think German Level 1 Lessons 1-5 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes definitely

Good methodology

I have never learned German begore andI've learn already few vocabulary. Also, It's not to quick. I don't need to learn anything by heart, this methodology late you remember. Even if you've not listen to the audiobook for one week or 3. At least it stayed in my memory.
