Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Stephen Smith is the boy who did not exist. Born out of wedlock in the early 1960s, Steve's parents - both devout Catholics - had felt so 'shamed' by their son's illegitimate birth that they hid him away from the world by locking him in the cellar...for 13 years. Apart from a few admissions to hospital as a result of his 'imprisonment', Steve remained in the coal cellar of the family home where he was deprived of daylight, his childhood, school and human contact until he'd reached his teenage years.

She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? Publisher's summary
A truly inspiring and heartbreaking book from the mother of little James Bulger - whose murder by two young boys shocked the world.
On 12th February 1993, Denise's life changed forever. As she was running errands at New Strand Shopping Centre, she let go of her two-year-old son's hand to take out her purse. Denise never saw her son again.
In this extraordinary and heart-wrenching audiobook comes the unflinching account of that terrible day from James Bulger's mother, Denise. What if she had never taken James shopping? What if she had turned right coming out of the butcher's instead of left? Would she have seen her son being led out of the centre by two children?
Denise's initial hope - of seeing her son on CCTV with other kids - quickly turned to devastation when, two days later, James' body was found. His murder shocked the world, as his killers became the youngest convicted murderers in the UK. Denise then took up a tortuous legal battle for James, and it was her astonishing strength and love for her son that ultimately helped to change the way the law treats victims of crime.
This is a mother's tale of finding a way through the despair to remember the happiness and wonderful memories that James brought his family. Above all, Denise doesn't want her son to be remembered as a murdered child, and with this beautifully written audiobook she does just that.

In 1927, while the majority of the township of Bath, Michigan, was celebrating a new primary school - one of the most modern in the Midwest - Andrew P. Kehoe had other plans. The local farmer and school board treasurer was educated, respected, and an accommodating neighbor and friend. The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together, Hutton had no idea who Mercury was, and, when the star told him his name, it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, but, from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991, he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends.

Heartbreaking and infuriating tragedy
I listen in my free time usually, but the heartbreaking and infuriating story of this tragedy had me hooked to this book and I finished it in less than 2 days. I had never heard of James before and am disgusted and disappointed to know this story now. The inhumanity behind his death and the true horror that has taken place since is sickening. How the government can fathom releasing those two monsters and continue to reoffend James family is beyond comprehension. Thank you to his mother for being his voice.

Tragic story, but well written, and narrated
I remember when James’s murder was in the news. I can’t imagine such a loss. I too, am astounded. Every time his murderer is freed and reoffends.
This was very well written. The narration was incredible. As difficult as this must have been to write. I think it is important to bring to light the failings of legal systems.

I can only empathize with Denise. She could have been any of us wonderful and loving and attentive parents. She could have been me. I cried so many times listening to this. The narrator was excellent, and the story is heart wrenching. I know that Venables is up for parole this year and I'm just disgusted by it... release his identity and let parents protect their babies from a monster. All my love to you Denise and your family. and despite your wishes, I hope someone kills these two monsters... or that there truly is a hell for them to burn in.
