Publisher's summary

Meet Tom. Or Dr O’Grady, as he used to be called. When you pass him on the street, most people don’t even give him a second glance. You see, Tom isn’t living his best life. Burdened by grief, he’s only got his loyal dog, Bette Davis, for company and a rucksack containing his whole world.

Then there’s Ruth and her son, DJ, who no longer have a place to call home. But Ruth believes that you can change the world by helping one person at a time - and Tom needs her help.

There are a thousand ways to find your home - you just need to be brave enough to look for them.

Couldn't put it down

Beautifully written. Ms Harrington takes you on a delightful rollercoaster ride. I laughed a lot listening to this book, but I think I cried more. The narrators voices suited the characters perfectly.

I went into this book with very high expectations...

And I wasn’t disappointed.
As with the other two books I’ve listened to by this author, this book had great, but flawed characters, that remind us, there is still some good in humanity.
The two narrators were also perfectly chosen.

Am so pleased to have found this. Picking a book is often like the lottery. Will it be a winner? This was a fine story, well read, a winner!! thus I urge you to try it.

I Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. The story of folks who have become homeless for different reasons teaches us alot about our judgements. But for me it was more about how to forge forth to make something better. Each character was richly drawn out and I was pulled immediately into the story. My only criticism is the male narrator. His reading was too stilted for a novel. It brought me out of the story many times.

Drags on - couldn’t finish it

The characters are stiff- the story goes nowhere. I didn’t care about any of these people.

Great Story!

Loved this book! Redemptive, with a feel good ending, yet not a "fluffy" book. Deals with hard issues.

Terrific story

I really enjoyed it and thought both narrators were excellent. The characters were interesting, and Ruth who is autistic was particularly well drawn.

EXCELLENT

This book was very well written, so much so you felt you were actually there with the characters. Very moving story which also ended very well (so many other books tend to rush the ending and tie up loose ends disappointingly following an enjoyable read).
I didn't agree with a previous readers review with regards to the male narrator, i thought he was very good and brought Tom to life, in fact both narrators were excellent and did justice to the characters.

Very well worth the purchase and without any realisation you are drawn to the plight of the characters with an understanding of life itself.

We need novels like this

I loved the compassionate plot. It made me cry with sadness and with joy. The Characters are believable but the male reader who told Tom’s story ( Frank Grimes) stopped me giving 5 stars for performance. His tone was aggressive, loud and without nuance. It does not reflect Tom’s character. Jill Crawford’s Ruth is spot on. However, I would still thoroughly recommend this novel on audible.

The best audiobook I have read this year

A beautifully written story that takes you into the world of the characters and their hopes and past lives. The narration was excellent and I look forward to reading or listening to the authors next book

An inspiring story of all ' normal people.

A beautiful story of what can change people's lives and the sadness it brings to lead them into a new way of life and how humanity judges people who are not seen as ' normal ' in society. My 2nd book to read from Carmel Harrington. I will choose another now .

Great read!

I was worried that this would be similar to Carmel’s first book I read ‘The women at 72 Derry lane’ but I wasn’t! It was completely different. Great book and well written. I was gripped from the beginning. I really enjoyed listening to whilst reading this book.

Laboursome, but the last 40 minutes were good

A good story in principle, but not much meaningful progression throughout the majority. There is a satisfying ending, unfortunately it is not worth the time investment. Lots of good reviews, so perhaps I'm just one of the unlucky ones to not enjoy it.

Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover!

This is one of those books that grabs you from the moment you start reading right through to the end. A feel-good story that’s Very easy to listen to. I didn’t want it to end. The narrators were very good as well.
