Publisher's summary

New York Times Best Seller • A life-changing guide to finding your direction - and your passion - in a world of seemingly limitless options

“For those who want to find their passion...a step-by-step guide for restructuring one’s life so that it has meaning, direction, and joy.” (Ellen Kreidman, author of Light His Fire and Light Her Fire)

If you suspect there could be more to life than what you’re getting, if you always knew you could do anything - if you only knew what it was - this extraordinary book is about to prove you right. No matter what your age, no matter how “unattainable” your dreams, you can create and live a life you love.

I Could Do Anything If Only I Knew What It Was reveals how you can recapture “long lost” goals, overcome the blocks that inhibit your success, decide what you want to be, and live your dreams forever. You will learn:

  • What to do if you never chose to be what you are.
  • How to get off the fast track - and on to the right track.
  • First aid techniques for paralyzing chronic negativity.
  • How to regroup when you've lost your big dream.
  • To stop waiting for luck - and start creating it.

A life without direction is a life without passion. I Could Do Anything If Only I Knew What It Was guides you not to another unsatisfying job, but to a richly rewarding career rooted in your heart’s desire.

Best book ever!!!

Where does I Could Do Anything If Only I Knew What It Was rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Seriously the most straight forward, insightful book ever. It cuts through all the junk and goes straight to what you need to do to find what you want to do and why you act the way you do.

Didn't work for me

A lot of the information presented was good, but it really didn't touch base with my career problem, in this economy, post 21st century recession. A lot of side arm Freudian psychosis, with your inner child. Lack luster , afterschool motivation.

Great for anyone feeling stuck or lost

There are very thought provoking questions & exercises throughput the book that helped me to sort through some of the clutter in my mind & gain clarity on what I want & how to get it with realistic actions that did not seem overwhelming.
Everyone arrives at a crossroads at one point or another & this book really helps to decide what direction is right for you to follow.
There were too many references to your childhood & parents than necessary, but overall a very worthwhile book.

Brilliant!

A must for someone who is not looking for just another job, but desires to quell the restlessness of not finding the "right" path or career. If traditional job hunting books are missing the point with resumes and skill set analysis, THIS is the book you want and need!

You may even recognize Elizabeth Gilbert's Flight of the Hummingbird reference to author Barbara Sher's definition of scanners, but there are so many more jewels within these pages! Thank you Barbara!

Confused, Unfocused, Without a Target Audience

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure anyone would fully enjoy this book It had a few interesting parts, but it was scattered.

What could Barbara Sher have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Sher should have had a single audience in mind. Instead, she spoke to countless individuals while creating exercises irrelevant for most of these specific groups she was discussing.

Any additional comments?

Like so many books in this genre, this work claims to help you find direction and know what type of business one should pursue. The first step in this exercise was to ask you what you wanted to do.... Which seems kind of dumb because if you knew what you wanted to do you would need this book. I believe this was her first book, if that's the case it surely representative of her early work and hopefully she has improved since. I believe she is knowledgeable but this book is entirely unfocused.

Ehh

Basically just is telling you to settle for mediocre. Gives very general advice that you can find in someone’s blog online. Everything in this book says nothing is your fault and it’s all because of what you have gone though.

Really really good

Barbara Sher delivers her own brand of very clear and effective analysis of why different types of people might be feeling stuck for different kinds of reasons. She has obviously drawn from vast experience and her writing is totally on point. What I especially like about her is that she doesn't spew out the typical "retrain your mind to be positive and think anything is possible" à la Anthony Robbins et al. (nothing against Tony Robbins but..) She is much more pragmatic than that... you don't have to become a different person and think differently.. you're fine with your ups and downs and negativity and moaning. All you need are a few very simple pointers and tools to get you going in the direction of increasing happiness, gradually, patiently, one baby step at a time. I recommend this audiobook.

strong start but became pseudosciencey

some good introspective activities at the start but then dove into childhood psychology which seemed more speculative than scientific
