I Read This Book On The Heels...

of Mark Rashid's Whole Heart, Whole Horse, a stunningly impressive and even poetic book about horsemanship--and how it enriches living. Often, one will read such an inspirational book and go immediately to another work by the same author and be disappointed, finding him to be a one-hit wonder. This was not the case here. If anything, Horsemanship Through Life is an even deeper and more enjoyable work. Rashid not only gets to the very heart of horsemanship and everything I have always believed and practiced in working with my own horse, Sassy, he is a very skilled and patient storyteller in the balance. I cannot wait to get to more of Mark's books and read even more of the horsemanship and philosophy of a kindred spirit.

Amazing book

Excellent blend of storytelling, life coaching and hands-on advise for improving the relationship between horse and rider. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Injuries, growth, centered energy, respect..HORSES

This book offers a growth experience as Mark Rashid reflects on some of his stumbles and face plants along his journey and how they were a result of going along in his journey instead of traveling. Or, in horse terms, just sitting on a horse versus riding it.

The stories he tells, at first seem to be disparate, unconnected, but by the time you reach the end of the book, and look back, you see how it is all connected. Yesterday I heard the portion where he was describing how the human body has more balance and energetic communication with the horse at a point slightly below the belly button.

Today, searching for youtube videos with Mark Rashid, I stumbled on one where he was giving a talk at what appeared to be one of the Equine Affair type of venues, and he was giving a demonstration of how you put your energy in that spot and showing how much it improved the power with very little effort, and he showed that a muscle has straight strength but how the centered focus of energy had a circular power. And, the various demonstrations done with volunteers from the audience were amazing.

I checked out his website to see what videos he had and hope to buy some in the future with the training methods. I hope some of this centered energy information is in some videos too. Doing it along with the youtube video and with what I heard on this book yesterday, it was an amazing feeling and one I hope to incorporate with horses.

Told with his usual gentle and humble humor, the stories are excellent and, of course, life enhancing.

The old man and Buck are spoken of again, and their portions are much appreciated.

By the time you reach the end of the book, and turn the ideas thread throughout around and consider them, you will find that you've been given some tools to travel through life, and not just go along through life. Or, to ride with and not just sit on the horse.

Not what I'd hoped for.

This was too heavy on long anecdotes that eventually lead to points that didn't exactly rock my world. After all that anecdotal storytelling, I guess I had hoped the payoff would be bigger and deeper insights. Just not my cup of tea.

Very moving book

Mark Rashid speaks a lot about his experiences with Aikido in this book. He has a lot of good points. If we aren't usually patient, kind and understanding throughout our regular days, why would we expect to be this way when we go out to work with out horses? Very good book. Made me laugh and shead some tears in the end.

Great approach to horsemenship and life!

It was refreshing to hear a man be so honest about himself and his efforts to improve his horsemenship skills. I loved how he saw, his standards for working with horses was very much like living life, with integrity, respect and mindfulness. His connections were clear and consistent. Hearing Mark's ideas and philosophy only supported me more in the direction I was going, when before I doubted myself. Thank you!

Another fantastic book by Mark

so many wise words and great stories and examples. Mark is the one horseman that has totally changed my view point on horses by his writing alone. All his books have now become my bible.

Learn attitude through the authors life stories

Listened to it every time I needed to do accomplish monotononous manual work such as weeding. It actually got me looking forward to the work because I knew that I'd get to listen some more of this book. In addition to golden principles for horsemanship, reading this book actually gave me more appreciation for the work I'd do. Everybody has their ups and downs. This book is about the comfort trap that Mark Rashid got into and how he worked his way out of it into honoring his teachers with the dignity in his work.

Excellent - highly recommended

I wish all horse folk would listen to Mark Rashid. I've read and listened to a few of his now and this one is excellent, as are all the others. Mike Chamerlain is not my favourite narrator, but the book is so good, with so many insights, that this is no longer an issue after about 5 minutes. I have so many bookmarks in this one and I am sure I will listen to it often. "The old man" comes through beautifully in the stories and I love how Mark explains his thought processes and how the principles of the teachings are the things which come through. Yes, yes and YES. Highly recommended.

Inspiring and worth the listen

This story line got better and better as the book progressed. Mark appears to be a humble man with plenty of knowledge and wisdom to share with those who want to hear. The lessons are learnt directly from life and are not step by step how-to's instilled by text book yielding scholars.

Even if you are not a horse rider I believe you will enjoy this narrative.

The narrator was clear, fast and his tone suited the message.

As always brilliant

Mark Rashid is so inspirational though at times although he's made me take a long hard look at myself I almost think I shouldn't work my horses as I am so insensitive. I have become addicted to him.

Invaluable.

I'm in my second year since my first 'natural horsemanship' clinic. There are many challenges with mind and horse as I attempt to learn and hone skills. This book has put my mind a much better direction.
