Publisher's summary

This is a new reading of the thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

An awe-inspiring survival story

Would you consider the audio edition of Endurance to be better than the print version?

I don't own the print version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Endurance?

The climb and trek across the "impassable" center of Elephant Island in a race to find help and rescue the rest of the party.

What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?

Mr. Prebble did a fantastic job overall. His variations between character readings were great, and understated enough to not be jarring or comical. His voice intensity drove the dramatic parts of the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was awestruck by the amount of adversity that these men overcame, and perhaps most impresssively, doing so with relative optimism. I was just significantly impressed.

Fascinating!

The story of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated voyage to Antarctica, Endurance is both the name of his ship and a fitting title to the amazing struggle the crew faced. Before listening to this fascinating book, I only knew the barest of facts about Shackleton. The book was written in the 1950's but tells the story in amazing detail, pieced together from the various crew members' diaries. And the narrator of the version I listened to, Simon Prebble, was a great asset to the story as well, using different voices for the each crew member's diary contributions. Highly recommend this one.

Lansing and Pebble had me at hello

As I did not research this story ahead of time, I ended up being on the edge of my seat the whole tale. I recommend waiting until completing this book before doing additional research on this amazing journey.
