Story
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

Story
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

"The tale of Carl Wake and the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer's audiobook is as perfectly shaped and flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever listened to of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man's failure and redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This audiobook is surely destined to become a classic."

Story
The lure of paradise was unmistakable, and Bill Butler was on a quest to find it with his wife Simonne-riding the Pacific currents on their sloop. In this powerful account of their 66-day odyssey, Butler tells a gritty, harrowing tale of their battles against nature, despair, and their own demons. He reveals how he and Simonne found the strength to survive despite the ravages of hunger, storms, and sharks. Based on Butler's faithful log entries, 66 Days Adrift is both a chilling cautionary tale for sailors with big ideas and an inspiring story of love, faith, and survival against long odds.

Story
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

On October 12, 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the remote, snow-peaked Andes. Out of the 45 original passengers and crew, only 16 made it off the mountain alive. For 10 excruciating weeks, they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, these men and women not only had to keep their faith; they had to make an impossible decision: Should they eat the flesh of their dead friends?

When the fishing vessel La Conte sinks suddenly at night in 100-mile-per-hour winds and record 90-foot seas during a savage storm in January 1998, her five crewmen are left to drift without a life raft in the freezing Alaskan waters and survive as best they can. One hundred fifty miles away, in Sitka, Alaska, an H-60 Jayhawk helicopter lifts off from America's most remote Coast Guard base in the hopes of tracking down an anonymous Mayday signal. A fisherman's worst nightmare has become a Coast Guard crew's desperate mission.

The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

Publisher's Summary
Racked by hunger, buffeted by storms, scorched by the tropical sun, Callahan drifted for 1,800 miles, fighting off sharks with a makeshift spear and watching as nine ships passed him by. "A real human drama that delves deeply into man's survival instincts (Library Journal), Adrift is a story of anguish and horror, of undying heroism, hope, and survival, and a must-read for any adventure lover.
Critic Reviews
"Fascinating...a clearly written ocean yarn in which the stakes are high and a brave man wins through." (Wall Street Journal)

To test oneself...
...to the limit cannot really be done in a training scenario no matter how serious the situation. It is only when death threatens around every corner that human ingenuity and the will to survive can be truly revealed. Callahan depicts these qualities in graphic brilliance and forces the listener to experience at least a little of what he went through.

Incredible story; likely a better read than listen
Adrift is an absolutely incredible story of survival, perseverance, and the strength of one man's spirit. It is a rare, beautifully written, survival account, and I would highly recommend it.
Unfortunately, the narration is rushed and detracts from the beautiful writing. While it is nice to hear the story read by the author, this one deserves a second recording by a more skilled oral storyteller. It just felt rushed, and rushing through such an incredible story simply does it a disservice.
An A+ read, but a so-so listen.

Where do I start?
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A decent narrator!
What did you like best about this story?
The survival element.
Would you be willing to try another one of the narrator’s performances?
Absolutely not.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Adrift?
His describes a lengthy fantasy/dream at one point. Made me wonder if he was "all there."
Any additional comments?
One of the worst books I've purchased with a credit. Terrible narrator. He has a STRONG Midwestern type accent, sounds nerdy, and talks way to fast, (this is the only audible book I've listened to where I had to run my iPod in slow mode.)
The book itself is poorly written. Overly dramatic. One gets the impression that the subject is reveling in recounting his adventures and that he actually enjoyed every minute of them.
Terrible, terrible, terrible!

5* all round
Having completed the journey successfully as half of a two-man team in the opposite direction, Steve embarks upon the solo journey across the Atlantic. Upon encountering difficulty, his boat capsizes and sinks and the book takes us through his 76 day journey at the mercy of the elements on Rubber Ducky III, his life raft.
We are enveloped in the multi-layered relationship he has with the fish, we are left astounded by his ingenuity and bravery and we are mesmerised by his ability to relay this journey.
An excellent delivery by the narrator, a lesson on the importance of preparation and a must-read for sailors and adventure lovers.
