Publisher's summary

On the worst birthday of my life, I come home to find my boyfriend in bed with another woman. Within hours, I’m drunk, homeless, and pledging to stay single forever. And that is when the dangerously sexy Seelie King rolls through town, looking for fae like me.

Every generation, the king holds a competition for Seelie queen. But for reasons he won’t explain, Torin is looking for a charade, not a real marriage. So when I drunkenly sling insults his way, I have his attention.

When Torin offers me 50 million to participate, I think, “What have I got to lose?” The answer turns out to be “my life,” because my competition will literally kill for the crown.

And the more time I spend with the seductive king, the harder it becomes to remember it’s all supposed to be fake. Now, my life—and my heart—are on the line.

An intriguing Fae world.

I absolutely love stories about Fae and this one really swept me up and carried me away. When I read the synopsis I knew that this would be a book that I definitely meshed with.

I love Crawford's smoothly executed writing style. The reader is immediately drawn into the story. The plot of the story is entertaining if not a little predictable at times. I couldn't pull myself away once I started reading. I enjoyed the world-building in this book. I like the Fae world that is layered over our own. I found myself craving more information about the Fae world as I kept reading.

Ava's character was delightful. I am a huge fan of a strong female lead and Ava was just that. She was a spurned female with nothing to lose at the start of the book. She really proved her mettle throughout the competitions in the story. I immediately loved her. Torin is a decent character. I felt that he could have used a little more character development because I enjoyed his character but I didn't feel as attached to his character as I did with Ava's character. I did enjoy the secondary characters and the spark that they added to the story.

The romance in the story was a slowish-burn affair. It didn't get too steamy but I really loved the way that Crawford executed their romance. Ava and Torin spend time together preparing for the tasks in the competition and they get to see each other's personalities. The reader can see the gradual development of feelings between the two of them as the story progresses. And it is sort of an enemies-to-lovers romance so it's pretty satisfying.

Overall, this was an exciting story with interesting characters and an intriguing Fae world. If you are a fan of stories with original ideas and addictive writing then you'll want to grab this one!

Enjoyable

A nice story with mystery and romance. It does end on a cliffhanger but it’s worth sticking with the series. It’s a fairytale that goes horribly wrong. A story of a commoner that is attracted to a king but there’s a problem. It’s a simple plot, no deep thoughts, but entertaining.

Fantastic

Frost gives heavy hunger game vibes! Except it’s for the place to be queen!

Was quite predictable. But I did really enjoy it!

Similar to Throne of Glass

I usually really love CN Crawford's books, and while I didn't necessarily dislike this one, it just felt... disconnected. A little repetitive. There were some instances that felt a little too similar to Throne of Glass, and there was one conversation with one of the female characters and the male lead that was almost a direct rewrite of a conversation between Miss Bingley and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. It ALMOST comes off as lazy because of all the elements that feel too closely connected to other books. I don't know if that's intentional or not, but it was slightly off-putting nonetheless. Other than that, it's a pretty basic plot. A little insta-love. Pretty predictable, but I always love predictability because I know exactly what I'm getting. If you're a fan of CN Crawford, it's definitely worth a read, but it definitely is not my favorite of her books.

Would have given five stars, but...

I loved this book. I would have rated it 5 stars, but it ends on a cliffhanger with a bunch of loose ends, and the second book ruined it for me. The second half it totally different in tone and pacing, and I was not a fan. It's too bad, because if this book had been able to be a stand-alone novel, it would be one of my favorites.

Can’t wait for the second book

I loved the story line and how you do not expect what is going to happen and then bam 💥 and you want the rest so mad I have to wait. This is why I get the books that have all of them so I can binge.

Short & Sweet

I really enjoyed this! There wasn’t a ton of world building but it was still an enthralling story. Can’t wait for the next book!
