Publisher's Summary

True love can last an eternity... but immortality comes at a price.

On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever.

A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her... despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.

Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.

Part historical novel, part supernatural thriller, The Taker is an unforgettable tale about the power of unrequited love not only to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, and how each of us is responsible for finding our own path to redemption.

    "Too dark for my taste"

This is only the 2nd book that I gave up on in several yrs of audible membership. Unless you enjoy dark, weird tales including sexual sadism, give this a pass.

    "Starts Well...rapidly goes downhill"

The opening scenes are riveting. A mysterious woman arrives at an emergency room. Has she killed someone? A sad hearted doctor...secrets. I was starting to look for a few more books by this author.

Then it turns into 50 Shades of Stupid. A flat and uninteresting foray into what the author, no doubt considers a masterwork of erotica -- but in reality is as interesting as listening to grass grow.

There's very little of the paranormal here -- unless you consider endless trite bodice ripping style paranormal.

    Yuck. No,,,yuck squared.

"started well, then became too weird"

i really enjoyed the first few chapters, then the story became too weird for words. it was like someone wrote one chapters of five different books (each weird their own way ) than randomly thrown them together in a book. i particularly hated the sourcery and child abuse parts

    "The Soulless"

Very interesting story about a young girl who loved a young man too much,so much so that she had committed atrocities just to keep him from harm and with her and in doing this, doomed both their souls for eternity. For all that she has endured, given up...in the end, she winds up lonely and un-loved.The narrator did a great job narrating the characters. The ending of the book though was a bit flat, could have been more creative.

"A little slow at the end"

Overall, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next! The end of this book was a bit slow and left me wondering if I should even read the next...but I already bought it! P.S. it's a good start to the second book...I just hope it doesn't disappoint with the ending again!!

    "Lacking"

This stories premise definitely had potential. What was missing was real character development. As a reader, I felt that I was not drawn into the protagonist's plight, and therefore felt quite ambiguous about her circumstances.

    The narration was only adequate.

All in all somewhat of a downer.

"This is the worst book I have ever listened to"
What disappointed you about The Taker?

Absolutely depraved! Rape seems to be the constant theme, yet in a positive way? This book is just bizarre.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This book will make you sick to your stomach and question the future of literature.

    "A strange one."
What did you like best about The Taker? What did you like least?

    Its fairy Tale like quality.

Which character – as performed by Laurel Lefkow – was your favorite?

    Adair

Did The Taker inspire you to do anything?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I had to get to the end of this book in order to find what on earth it was all about. I enjoyed the various twists and turns through time and the Fairy Tale quality of the story. However, having made it through to the end via a meandering tale, I felt somewhat dissatisfied. Overall the book was too long, it needed to get to the point and the modern day stuff was just a bit annoying and seemed slightly off kilter. The main character is hard to like and I'm not sure she was worth the time spent getting to know her especially as it was really only during two brief interludes of a very long life. A weird one, I'm not sure if I liked it or not.
