Publisher's Summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Listen to all of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mysteries.

    "Not my fave Walt story"

Thankfully, I had already read more of the books in the series before this first one.

Not my favorite book in this series, whatsoever. I found it to be hard to get into, then once I was hooked, it was easy to lose interest. And the ending just didn't suit me.

Still love Craig Johnson's Longmire series.

How could the performance have been better?

After watching the tv version I was inspired to try the books. The voice of the narrator sounded like a much older man and I did not care for that

"Craig Johnson has a huge and loyal fan base"

George Guidall's narration is wonderful as usual.

I keep listening to the Walt Longmire Mystery series novels in hopes of finding what so many of Johnson's fans appreciate about the series. A Cold Dish is the first novel in the long series that gets a average rating at Audible of 4.6 stars. What I find with this book is a good story made better by great narration.

I ended up returning the book due to the amount of profanity. I do enjoy George Guidall as a narrator.

"I think Walt Longmire is awesome!"

A good story and a fun list of characters. I didn't expect the ending. Walt has some keen observations about this world and I laughed along with his one liners. Genuine acrylic lining. Haha!

Please do note that the book has a fair amount of language, it is not for young children or gentle souls.

I can understand the small town mentality, habits and dialogue. This is not a big city thriller, it is written by someone who understands small town, small counties, and rural living in the western United States. If you know what it is like to live in an area with fewer than 100 people per square mile then this book will describe what you witness every day. I *really* enjoyed my listening time.

    "yuck"

Difficult to listen to, forced myself to finish it. Watching the show first makes this book irritating. Although I'm pretty sure if I hadn't seen the show, these characters would have still been awful. Whiney, disrespectful and mean. WOW.

My first Longmire story, and certainly not my last. Narrator was perfect for this title.

"Great Book!! Mm-hmm it is so."

There haven’t been many books that I have liked lately but I’m so happy to have stumbled onto Longmire. I knew Netflix had a series but I’ve never watched it and thought I’d start with the books before letting the show ruin it. Anyway, bottom line is that if you’re longing for a book with that western feel and just the right amount of modern then you’ll like the book. The humor in the book is subtle and perfectly placed within the dialogue. Found myself laughing out loud sometimes. Overall a great book that has me yearning the follow-on books.
