Publisher's Summary

Introducing Wyoming's Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting novel from the New York Times best-selling author of Dry Bones, the first in the Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix original series Longmire.

Fans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr, and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times best-selling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming's Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, full of memorable characters. After 25 years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire's hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Listen to all of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mysteries.

"Almost as good as watching on TV"

I was not sure what to expect but it was easy to see the Characters on TV making their way through the story. Enjoyed this one a lot and it looks like I might be getting a few more.

    "Nice Way to Start Longmire"

I decided to start the Longmire series at #1 (we've been watching the TV show), and it was a good way to go. The plot takes us nicely into northern Wyoming and its cultural tensions, and introduces a complex character very subtly, although I think it gets a little over the top at times. It reminds me of the Hillerman novels in its Indian country/frontier setting. I like that Longmire isn't the driven, total basket case that so many fictional lone wolf law enforcement characters are (think Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta), barely able to function as their emotions overcome them. Walt is troubled and flawed, but he can do his job and do it well. George Guidall, who also narrates the Tony Hillerman and Alan Furst novels, is really good in this, nuancing every character, changing shape as necessary. This is a good listen, I recommend it.

"I Could Listen to G. Guidall Read the Alphabet"

(...not really but Guidall is good) This was an okay story, some funny parts, some serious, but if not for Mr. Guidall I probably would not as liked it as much. He has a way of using his voice for all types of characters and he acts.

The story itself was interesting but predictable. I had it figured out rather early, of course not the getting there - but the finale was easy. The Ex-Veteran, sheriff Longmier of a large area of Wyoming area, snarky assistant, incompetent over-enthusiastic deputy (though he can keep his bullet), and small town attitudes makes up the cast of characters - along with the indispensable Cheyenne co-special forces "Tonto".

Up to you - I won't listen again.

""REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD....""

WELCOME TO THE WALT LONGMIRE MYSTERY SERIES AND ABSAROKA COUNTY, WYOMING! Author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire, a man of honesty, integrity, and human frailty. Many readers, myself included, find in Walt Longmire a gentle hero whose commitment to justice and determination to protect others is offset by his own personal challenges. Walt's keen insight is revealed through his quick wit and and camouflaged by his patient manner.
If you're looking for a new series that will draw you into to a captivating world with engaging and satisfying stories which will whet your thirst for more, I'm honored to recommend THE COLD DISH, Book 1, in the Walt Longmire Mystery Series.
I'm now listening to the series for the second time, and am finding it even more engaging this time around.
The masterful narration by George Guidall is a perfect match for the first person storytelling by Walt's character.
Welcome to the world of Sheriff Walt Longmire, his best friend Henry Standing Bear, his daughter Cady Longmire, and his Under-Sheriff Victoria Moretti. And, if you're new to this series, I envy you the journey that awaits.

"Too Good For Just One Superlative"

When trying to think of a title for this this review all that came to mind were one word superlatives that just didn't do this novel justice. To say I loved it is just an understatement.

What I loved most about this book was the way the author combined mystery and suspense with just the right amount humor to keep me completely engaged with the characters and the story.

If you decide to read / listen to this book I hope you love it as much as I did.
