Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An official Oprah Winfrey’s “The Books That Help Me Through” selection • The acclaimed Nobel Prize winner transfigures the coming-of-age story with this brilliantly imagined novel. Includes a new foreword by the author.

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. As Morrison follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, she introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized Black world.

“Morrison moves easily in and out of the lives and thoughts of her characters, luxuriating in the diversity of circumstances and personality, and revelling in the sound of their voices and of her own, which echoes and elaborates theirs.” —The New Yorker

Literature of the highest order

It’s a little hard to get into, and the story doesn’t really leave the ground until the protagonist leaves home which is more than halfway through the book, but the rewards are huge.

I loved listening to the sound of Toni's Voice

The sound of her voice reminded me of my family. The story reminds me of my lineage. Seemed to give me unforeseen insight on where I come from. I enjoyed his search and what he found at the end. Truth!

Tolstoy was right about families

Complex emotional psychological portrayal of an AA family. Toni Morrison surrounds us with fascinating people, family mythologies and truths
loves and revenge. She took me inside the characters, sorrow, rage, relationships. Terrific.

brilliant

epic story of a family, its myths, history, their lives and interactions. Toni Morrison was a brilliant world builder containing fully fleshed characters. Living in their humanity, coexisting with their triumphs, failures, flaws, and souls. At one with history and the mysticism behind unknown questions.

Toni read by Toni

Enough said.

Her voice is engaging and she has both an intellectual and emotional connection to the work. It’s like having story time with your favorite elder woman.

Never knew where the story was headed

Loved the book. The only criticism was it was hard to decipher when one character stopped talking and another one began because of the monotone voice of the narrator.

Her narration is the second gift of her incredible legacy

What a legacy Morrison left us. And so glad SHE is the narrator for her work in these audio books: her nuanced language, her syntax and characters sings straight f on the source of their maker. What a gift. A second gift.

Amazing

Why is Audible forcing us to write reviews in order to rate a book? I don’t want to write a review. I just want to leave my rating.
